New Jersey Transit should be ashamed - unfortionately, it is impossible to shame them. There has been one light out in the New York bound section of the train station for weeks and now there is a second. Even when all the lights are on in there, it is still too dark, so this is really annoying NJT - you can't even change a few lightbulbs? Come on!

Shall we assume you've notified the station attendant as well as bitching about it here? |

I've seen some posts re: the Train Station but -to date, have mostly ignored the threads. Past posts have ranted about the graffiti on the side of Shop Rite. I have to say that I took the time to check it out this am and was disappointed. I have always admired the SO train station -considering it to be a "center-piece" or "mantle" to the town's business district (much like the firehouse). There is -in fact, profanity spray painted on the side of the building but worse is this is obviously NOT the first time. You can see other graffiti had been painted over with large green blotches of paint (which almost looks as bad). It seems the access to the roof top is via the train station. There was a half hearted attempt to construct a fence but it obviously doesn't work. I would hope either Village Officials or whoever officially owns the SR Building would correct this immediately. It seems like an easy and inexpensive fix. If you can not (in these many years) figure out what to do with this building…or how to get it done, where –at least, is the pride of ownership? Much like the "broken window" theory, garbage like this should not be tolerated. How many commuters look out of their windows to see what looks like a dirty city? (which it isn't). Stuff like this would not inspire anyone to say, "Gee, let me check that town out" (referring to restaurants, shops etc...). After all, the train platform acts as a “welcome mat” and –for many, that is their first impression. I realize this may be small beans but the easy stuff should be strictly enforced. If not, who is to expect the big stuff to be addressed?

Sean, Send an immediate email to John Gross. Last time this was reported, it was addressed within a couple days. However, you are absolutely right that a longer term solution needs to be found. |

And while they are at it, can someone in town governement ask someone in county government to get rid of the graffitti on the S-turns on the South Orange Ave reservation underpass. This road is an entrance to our town, and it sends a bad message if we are tolerant of this blight. Its been up there for months already. I'd paint over it myself but would probably be arrested for defacing public facilities! |

You're absolutely right that the view from the train gives the wrong impression of our town. When I first moved here, I nearly missed the stop a few times- even though I was looking out the window- I would have sworn we were still in east orange. How many of us give particular directions to people the fist time they come to visit- so that they avoid the more run down areas and have a better impression of the town? I think that even though this is a train station post- we're coming back to the real root of the problem- that empty supermarket. That thing is horrible and right in the middle of town. Train station paint, statue- whatever- the real problem is that store. I know, I know, I'll take that issue to another board |
