I had heard a rumor about this yesterday and waited thinking someone would post something about it. I was very saddened to hear it was true, I was told he was a new officer. I looked on the township website but nothing was listed. From the Star Ledger: (on NJ.com) Jason B. Thompson THOMPSON - Suddenly, on May 26, 2006, Police Officer Jason B., of South Orange, made his transition, beloved son of Margaret and James Thompson, devoted grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Robert L. Watson, caring nephew of Clara Daniels, Mary Watson, Robert and Willie B. Watson and Dianne and James E. Wilson, all of North Carolina, great-nephew of Blanche Douglas of North Carolina, cousin of Barret Daniels, Barrington Olante, Daryl Daniels, and Angela Watson and Roger Hill, god-brother of James E. Wilson. He is also survived by Pace University friends and the South Orange Police Department. A celebration of his life will be held Tuesday 7 p.m. at New Hope Baptist Church, 106 Sussex Ave., Newark. Interment to follow in North Carolina. Visitation will commence on Tuesday 4 p.m. until time of service at 7 p.m. at New Hope Baptist Church. Published in the Star-Ledger from 5/28/2006 - 5/29/2006.

My heart and love goes out to the family and friends. A cougar in his boyhood, playing soccer - I remember him well. I'm stunned and saddened. |

This is such terrible news. Jason and his family live across the street from me on Meeker. Although I did not know him well---he was clearly a terrific young man. When my late wife Lisa and I moved to Meeker Street two years ago---I remember Jason was just getting ready to finish at Pace---he was the first person in the neighborhood to welcome Lisa and I to the street---just a great young man. We should all say a prayer for Jason and his family this Memorial Day weekend |

Very sad, indeed. It sounds like he was way too young. Sympathies to his family, friends, and the SOPD. |

Jason lived down the street from me. I didn't really know him except to wave as we drove by each other, or say 'hi' when he walked by my house with another neighbor. From what people have been saying he was a young man with a great future ahead of him. I'm doing two things, if anyone is interested. I'm going to have Bunny's make a platter of sandwiches and a tray of pasta to bring down to his family after the service as well as make a donation to the Police Memorial Fund. Anyone wanting to put anything toward either please PL me. (Blaze I spoke with your son but you weren't there. I plan to call back around 4pm) |

Jason was a wonderful young man who smiled every time I saw him. My prayers go out to his family and friends, to the South Orange Police Department and especially his training officer. "The death of a special person is the returning of a borrowed treasure"

Dear Flying, Nobody really knows what happened and I think that this is all we will ever know for sure. The fact is that he passed away in his home from a gunshot wound. Maybe it was an accident or other possibilities there was no note so the police will surely investigate. I only met Jason a few months ago when he joined the SOPD force. He was an extremely well mannered, respectful, lively, happy young man who should have had his whole life in front of him. To honor him properly we should let the police do their job, and remember that any rumors make it more difficult for the family to properly grief for their loss.

Very well said Bajou. Let's hope that the conspiracy theorists on this South Orange Specific topic show some respect for the dead, and keep their speculation away from this thread.

This is all a very sad tragedy, but it is believed that Jason was cleaning his gun, and it may have accidentally discharged, fatally wounding him. |

Dear LW That is what I believe because he was such a great, fun and bright kid. I wanted to stop all the talk that is going throughout town. This weekend I was asked alot of questions and was given alot of theories and frankly I think that should be stopped because it must be hard for the family to hear all this. All I know is I will miss his big smile and friendly hello when I get of the train in Mountain Station or walk my dogs in the parking lot there. |

BAJOU-He will definitely be missed. It really hurt my heart when my mom told me last Friday that he had passed. But because he was such a great person with such a warm and giving spirit, I know that he's in a better place where he can continue to watch and look over those he loved. And he was loved by so many people. His funeral service was also very touching. His friends from Pace U, and Morristown Beard (his high school), and members of other local police departments all came out. And of course, the outpouring of love and support from our community was present. Anyone who was fortunate enough to know Jason can know that he had a fulfilling life, and had realized his dream by becoming a cop. I just think of his smile and character and am thankful that I had the chance to know him. And I'll continue to pray for his parents and family. |
