Does anyone know what's on fire? Just came back from dinner in town and there is a smoky haze downtown and near my house (Church Street). I heard the fire engines go out during the storm earlier but do not know where they were headed (Ridgewood/Walton, maybe?). |

there is a fire in or around valley st.. next to j&j's beef patty place. i think it is an office building that used to be a house. we leave on forth street off of valley and the taste of burning smoke is heavily in the air. lots of fire trucks and we saw an ambulance. we were thinking lightning. could be anything tho. hope everyone is ok. |

SOFD is eminently qualified but the risk of injury during an active alarm is scary. I hope everyone is okay. |

Just was at A&P on Valley. Saw large flames on top of building, right side of road, several blocks up towards downtown. Looked major. Also thought about lightning. Drove around to avoid but wondered what it was. |

Yeah, At first I thought rain would be good for putting out a fire. But, an electical storm, plus the wet electrical danger of a fire. Bad. J.B. May it go out spontaneously. |

Unfortunately, this won't happen. I really hope our bravest are all okay at the end of this shift. |

How many people are in the SO Fire Dept, Bets, if you know? Are they still homeless (without a station)? |

Well, I wasn't counting the trailors behind the station where they have to huddle now, Hariseldon. |

It's still burning? I hope there weren't any apartments above the office. |

They've been displaced for 4 years now. I believe the force is still not fully staffed, but in truth I've lost track. harieseldon, shouldn't you be off doing legal research to benefit the village? Ya know, since you get paid so much as its counsel and all. |

Nicky: Can you confirm that it is the C-21 building? We just came from Allegiance Bank a few minutes ago and saw a Newark Fire Truck leaving. Just prior to that, we passed an ambulance with lights flashing coming from the scene. I hope all are okay. |

Eek, that doesn't sound good. I first smelled it in downtown SO at 9:45 p.m. and after my initial post, maggie reported rescue vehicles responding (although SOFD does have a new rescue rig so maybe?) shortly after 10 p.m., and fiche saw an ambluance near midnight with lights flashing. From my own reasoning, however, it doesn't seem so unfathomable that the fire could have been lightning-related, as it usually does take some time for such fires to become fully involved. Fiche, you couldn't make out which building(s) were involved? |
