I was wondering as I walked past the gazebo today if Mr. Gross ever gets off his butt and tours the town he is responsible for? The pavers below the gazebo and the gazebo itself are covered with pigeon crap. It not only is disgusting to look at it carries disease. Has anyone ever seen Mr.Gross tour the town he is in charge of? I would think that his day should start with a walking tour of the downtown area so he could personally see the things that need to be taken care of. If I had his job I would do this. I would not stand for crap even pigeon crap.
I personally have never seen Mr. Gross in town.

Why doesn't South Orange dedicate the Gazebo and benches to the great Township Manager?

They would be called the Gross Gazebo and the Gross Benches.

How about instead of investing 15 minutes of time to clean it up, how about tearing the gazebo out, spending over $250,000 towards a sculpture and waiting for the pigeons to crap on that?

Brilliant.

It really is amazing that you never see him around. He should treat the town the way he would treat his home. Would it be difficult for him to make sure that everyday or at least once a week the gazebo area is power washed? It is unacceptable. If you walk around the downtown you really become amazed with the basic condition. Forget the construction situation. I am talking about the basic house keeping of the town. Weeds are growing everywhere. Garbage in the streets. Whether you like John Gross or not it would be nice to see him walking the town with a pad making notes on things needed to be done, speaking to the residents about issues. I guess he just does not get it.

Hey Folks,

Don't mean to pile-on but what the hell. As long as we're discussing "gross" things that need to be fixed in town, how about the railroad trestle that bisects South Orange Avenenue? It's starting to look a little 3rd world country like underneath there. That trestle with new brickfacing, some nice "Welcome to South Orange" signage, and cleaned up underneath could be a nice centerpiece on South Orange Avenue---in fact, I would be happy to volunteer with other folks to clean it up one Saturday if that could be set up.

Steve: NJ Transit has been working on the trestle this week. I think they said it would be a couple of weeks till it is finished but I have seen them there every morning.

Thanks Mark,

That's good news---and thanks for your response---hopefully the BOT can put some pressure on NJT because it really does look like hell down there as I'm sure you know.

The other folks who need a kick in the rear is the firm heading up construction of SOPAC---now I realize its a construction site and things can get messy but the site looks like crap---there are ways to execute a construction project in a much cleaner/organized way---I see it in Manhattan all the time. Dedicating a crew of laborers and dumpsters might be a good start---when I walked by the other day I saw one 12-yard dumpster for the entire site---heck, a 12 yarder won't even handle all the junk in my basement!

Lastly, I'm not sure who is in charge of the 9/11 Memorial outside of SOPAC but that has become an extreme embarrassment for South Orange and needs some serious tidying up. It's just a mess, no other way of saying it. A number of folks have posted about this on MOL including me---anything the BOT can do on that front would be appreciated by everyone in town and especially those who lost friends/family on 9/11.

Thanks again.

That cannot be a 9-11 memorial outside of sopac. (how absurd to designate it as so by VP, and if it is, the construction has basically destroyed it)

In the days afer 9-11 it was a place for a spontaneous gathering, just as in the reservation. There was nothing ever formal. I still recall the running shoes left there by the kids whose father died.

It would, however, be a wonderful idea for the town to have a 911 memorial. Why shouldn't it be in the park, near the large memorial stone?

It really rubs me the wrong way that this was called a memorial, and I really think we ought to put an end to that nonsense -- if we want a real memorial, then do so...

Pete
