The VP will give his redevelopment update at this evening's meeting. Someone else will no doubt give the update on Saiyd Plaza, if there is anything to report.

Several weeks ago, the VP reported that the only hold-up with Sterling was that it had to receive approval from NJT about Sterling's plans to shore-up the the area near the tracks. Title has not passed to Sterling yet since it cannot obtain financing until it excavates to make to sure that the contamination is not any worse than what is anticipated.

It seems as if nothing is happening at Beifus.

I think that the members of the BOT have a fiduciary responsibility to ask the tough questions if the VP's report is the usual vague report which really doesn't say anthing. When residents get up and ask these questions, they're really not given satisfactory answers. As a matter of fact, they're even criticized for asking questions. BOT - don't you think you have a responsibility to the residents of this town to ask questions which require specific answers?

Vague? Doesn't say anything? You mean like these:

March 20, 2006 (almost THREE months ago)
http://www.southorange.org/minutes/2006/03-20-06CA.pdf
1. Update on Village Redevelopment – Village President Calabrese commented that the
Planning Board had approved an amended site plan application for the Beifus site which
eliminated the basement from the building, and that construction should hopefully begin
again on the site before the month is over
.

January 9, 2006 (over FIVE months ago)
http://www.southorange.org/minutes/2006/01-09-06ca.pdf
Update on Village Redevelopment – Village President Calabrese updated the Board as
follows: 1) Vose Avenue project – Stirling Properties has started with construction and
demolition of the existing buildings, however, but within the last month and a half, they have
been stopped twice by the DEP due to questions concerning contamination. No
contamination was found, however, asbestos did have to be removed. Construction of the
parking deck and the supermarket will commence soon followed by the construction of 87
condos. The supermarket is anticipated to open in November. Village Administrator, John
Gross added that the Department of Community Affairs has given approvals for the footings
and foundations which are now out for bid, and the Village will be issuing permits as of
tomorrow for the footings and foundations 2) SOPAC – The movie theatre is anticipated to
open in July or early August
with the live stage theatre to open in November. 3) Beifus site –
Exorbitant amounts of water have been found on the site. Village President Calabrese noted
that this item would be discussed later this evening in closed session in an effort to find a way
to assist Mr. Beifus.

http://www.southorange.org/minutes/2004/7-19-04ca.htm
4. Update on Village Redevelopment- Most of the issues were discussed during the July 19, 2004 Special Meeting. Village President Calabrese stated that by September, there should be “a lot of movement in the downtown area.”}

One of the newly elected trustees was the only candidate who came to my house during the campaign. She said she knew that people were unhappy with the pace of redevelopment and this was one of the things she was campaigning on. I haven't seen anything yet which supports what she said knew were residents' concerns. It's time the members of the BOT show the residents that they too are frustrated with the pace of redevelopment, and are willing to do something to make it happen.
