I am issuing a challenge to all MOL folk. Can you survive an all day mirth-making Croquet Tourny? I was in a sporting goods store this weekend and purchased a croquet set on a whim. I had not played the "sport" since 1979/80 (I know this b/c I shattered all of my father's mallets killing ants behind the garage at my first communion party). I can't say I have improved all that much since. According to the packaging, Croquet is the "Sport of Kings". It is in this vein that I attempted to get an all FOLEY DEATH MATCH going. My brood was not in tune with this idea, opting instead to watch Spongeboob videos ad nauseum. I think it would make a great MOL face to face opportunity on a random Sunday afternoon. Think of it... Fine Wine Fine Folks Croquet if necc. We could even have a snooty dress code. (always wanted a reason to buy knickers) Pate is optional Picinic baskets are required. whadya think ? |

I played Croquet at camp in the early Eighties. When we played we wore what ever we wanted. Is there a Croquet court in South Orange? I would think it would be very dangerous to set it up in the park. The wickets are very hard to see unless you know what you are looking for. If I had a set I would put bright orange tape on the wickets to make them easier to see. |

Matt, I also have a croquet set (never used.) I am interested in your suggestion, especially the part about the snooty clothes. May I suggest hats? I have to warn you I will NOT play croquet without Bloody Marys. I wonder though, is a public park a bad idea because of the liquor/wine that is necessary to make croquet enjoyable? J.B. |

We use to play when we wer little kids with the older more kewl teenagers across the street from us. They sure didnt have a 'dress code,' unless you count the 'hippie look.' And forget the Bloody Mary's, they smoked pot! We had a lot of fun! Think we still have a set in our garage. We could set it up on Floods Hill! |

There is truth to what fiche says:
Although I prefer:
JTA, Maybe pot is a better for a public park. Great idea! BTW, I'm still very pro-hats. J.B. |

JB You might have a point. There are signs that say 'No Alcohol" But none that say "No Pot Smoking!" |

The offical Dress Code for the United States Croquet Association: Croquet players customarily wear all white apparel on court. In all USCA titled events, such apparel is expected. The tournament director must approve any exceptions http://www.croquetamerica.com/Rules/officialrules.asp JTA: I believe that I know those older kids. May have been visiting them once or twice during the games. |

"is a public park a bad idea because of the liquor/wine that is necessary to make croquet enjoyable?" Put it in a brown bag. It works in Newark. Croquet surely is the game of kings. I am in. |

I am sooo... glad to se folks are interested. Maybe we can get this going in June or July. I really would love to do this. In fact I am thinking I will sport a kilt and white collar tee. As far as the booze/public park issue, we must figure out a proper venue. I agree bloody's and high balls are needed to increase competitive juices. |

Matt, I would spend the $1000 for a kilt for this, but why is everyone ignoring my suggestion about the hats? Spitz, Alert the media? More helicopters... come on! J.B. |

Hats are in. Seriously, we could have a blast. Maybe even raise cash for a charity if we have enough willing teams. A great Sat./Sun day out with friends and family. A trophy for winners, best dressed, most snooty on court behavior, etc. It could be the great start to a community tradition. Believe me, these towns could use some cool new tradition! |

It's now a SOPAC fundraiser. Invitation requests white attire. How ironic. Which situation seems believable to you, yourself: Foley had an inspiration for croquet and people who enjoy and know the game have a friendly debate on the rules and dress code; the town secretly had plans for a SOPAC benefit involving croquet that's never been heard of by anybody and Matt Foley found out and posted an invitation to practice; or the town stole Foley's initial idea in an attempt to use Maplewoodonline sentiment to their wicked ends. Incredibly, I think I choose the latter. I don't think Foley would've sat on information about ACTUAL fundraisers for SOPAC. I do think the leadership of this town (Calabrese, O. Gross, and Matthews) are capable of exploiting anything they can in order to advance their secret, beleagured, and impossible plan. Woe is South Orange. |

If not in a public park, where would be large enough and suitable for your gathering, Foley? It sounds great, but wonder where.....? |

perhaps there are two or more neighbors that would let their yards be used, or perhaps you live next to a park, that way all the drinking can be done on private property, and the playing on public.... |

There is a large open flat area across the street from Bunny's. We could have drinks delivered by the Bunny's staff. (Crossing the street with a top hat, "I'm late, I'm late.") How's that for snooty? If a little surreal.
Is that hedgehog still missing? And where in M/SO will we find a "queen." J.B. Curiouser and curiouser. |

Sounds like SOPAC should have hired Foley as its Executive Director. Then they wouldn't have had to steal his idea. (The right thing to do would have been to contact him.) |

Now if this is indeed true this would be the ideal setting to stage a Dadaesque public protest during the event - everyone could where masks to protect your identities. One could really have fun with this.... |
