Combined thread on 2 unrelated topics:

1) I noticed the huge flag on South Orange Ave was flying at half-staff today. Anyone know why?

2) I was in the library today and am happy to say that "temporary" airconditioning was being installed. It looks absolutely horrible and probably is costing a fortune, but I am glad that patrons and employees will not have to suffer on hot days this Summer.

I called Village Hall yesterday to ask. It's apparently still flying half-mast for Officer Thompson. I'm curious when they're planning on raising it again - it'll be three weeks, tomorrow, since he died.

Am I the only who's bugged by the fact that they don't make a public announcment of some kind when the flag is flown half-mast? It's supposed to be a public sign of mourning, but if they don't tell you who you're supposed to be mourning, it's just depressing. Also, for what it's worth, where I grew up, they didn't lower the flag just because a public employee died - it was reserved for national events like Memorial Day, or the death of a president, or the Challenger disaster. But, I guess the tradition is different here. It would just be nice if there was a statement on the website or in the News-Record, or something like that.

It is just you...

Pretty insensitive to say "just because a public employee died."

Why not bring your grip to the police department and see what their response to you is?

I don't even know how to respond to this thread.

I think it's nice our town thinks enough of our police officers to lower the flag when one of them tragically dies. What bothers me about the flag is it is not taken down when it rains.

tomp,

your quote: "It's supposed to be a public sign of mourning, but if they don't tell you who you're supposed to be mourning, it's just depressing."

In addition to your insensitiveness, you have some nerve to expect to be spoon-fed with information that almost everybody in the Village knows. What did you expect? a personal call from the police to tell you why the flag is halfstaff? Pick-up the phone and call the police, they'll tell you. The premature death of officer Thompson was announced in the newspaper and in the Village's website. It saddened many people. It is decent of the Village to fly the flag halfstaff for one of its public servants. It expresses the mourning of the rest of us, and if it depresses you tomp, tough.
