Just went to throw the garbage out and there are 2 cop cars in our lot (lights on, no one in them or around them) and 2 blocking the street on Vose Avenue. Two cops brought someone in cuffs up from one of the driveways and took him away but the other cops aren't in their cars and we don't see them anywhere.... anyone with a scanner know what's going on? we're a little freaked that something is going on since the other cops are still out there searching, doing something...not quite sure what's up...

Lucy- Any news on what happened? I am still trying to buy a dencent scanner. did look in Radio Shack a few weeks ago with no luck. With four police cars on the scene it sounds like it must have been something serious. Don't they only have five or six cars on at a time? |

Well they almost ALWAYS respond in pairs. If one cop car stops a car, then most likely another one will show up within a minute or two. |

No news yet-i am going to call the department tomorrow-we were very concerend-i have never in the almost 8 years i have been here seen 4 cop cars with lights on, doors wide open, and completely abandoned in the middle of the street and in a residential parking lot...4 cop cars-no cops in sight-it was a little creepy. the fact that the doors were open made us assume they has jumped out of their cars in a chase...why else would they leave the doors open??? all people driving down vose (on the corner of mead) at that time had to turn around because they weren't able to pass... i'm not trying to make any assumptions or make anyone alarmed, but living in one of the two buildings and coming upon it in my pj's with my garbage is a little unnerving. it's not something you see every day and it appeared to us that someone was on the loose and they were focusing a chase/search/whatever on our parking lot and the lot next door...it's a little scary-combustion-please keep the sarcasim elsewhere-it was a serious question since to residents of the building where something was occurring it is not a joke...i would like to know what was going on and if there was reason to be concerned going outside at the time this was going on... |

I agree completely Joel-I thought that less than that were on patrol on a given night-we were glad to see that there were so many available officers last night. However, the situation appeared to be quite serious...and we are curious/anxious to know what happened in our "backyard". Myself or Mr. Lucy will be calling tomorrow morning. it was very disconcerting to walk out into our "backyard" into that. |

Question-is there a specific number we should call to get the info we want? or is the non-emergency number? never called to get info-Mr. Lucy seems to think they can't give out that info.... |

Glock makes a good point. Around here a routine traffic stop will involve at least two cars and I have seen three on more than one occasion. Since all the towns in this area have one person RMPs this is for backup purposes. I am going to make one of my infamous wags and say that someone was probably trying to steal a car or headlights from a car. That is usually good for a foot chase and also would explain the open doors.

When I called the police about noise calls, two or more officers usually come, and I told them, that I didn't think it needed such a response for loud college students, however, I was told that its always for their safety. But if you think about it only 4 cops to the whole town(not that South Orange is very big)...what if one or two are busy...we seemed stretched pretty thin. I wouldn't want that job. |

Well...it appears from a PL I received that some people on this board are very uncomfortable with people asking questions about what goes on in their backyards. That they are "troubled by people always trying to figure out what the police are doing in town." So maybe this should be in Soapbox now-I'm just curious-SHOULD people be concerned about police activity in their backyard or is the general consensus out there that people should just not care and if you do care don't stick your nose where it "doesn't belong"???? Thoughts anyone (sorry but that PL really p****d me off.)

The people who PL'd you can bury their heads in the sand all they want.. You have a right to know what's going on just outside your doorway. Ignore them, Lucy, and keep trying to get the information that will help you sleep at night. |

I agree completely Joel-I thought that less than that were on patrol on a given night-we were glad to see that there were so many available officers last night. Don't be fooled Lucy, in NO way do we have the number of officers that we should. If you see 4 cars on a call then most likely there are NO OTHER OFFICERS to take care of the rest of the town. This depends on the time of day but for the most part 4 is all we have. It's nice to have 4 guys running through the yards after a car thief but what if they're running after 5 thieves? And what if while all this is going on there's alarm calls and medical calls and whatever else? As far as the PM you received, some folks think of it as a bunch of nosey residents needing to be in the know and some of us would like to know what kind of scum is running through our yards. |

I think everyone in the neighborhood should be concerned about what's happening around them. If there's a recurring crime problem, we're obligated to alert everyone to watch for unusual activity. That said, if an incident has no immediate effect on the neighborhood (for example, if Sunday's police activity was in response to a domestic abuse situation), someone in the know should feel free to post something like, "It was a private matter, not a public crime." That would do two things: stop any rumors about something worse, and put everyone at ease that they need not worry any further about the safety of their families. I'm very upset about, what I perceive to be, an overall lack of concern about crime in our neighborhood. |

If there were only four patrol cars out on a Saturday night at 10:30 with a fifty plus officer department, something is really, really wrong.

thegoodsgt-that was also the issue I had with the PL-the person told me that while they were "NOT at liberty to disclose the information, but the call was nowhere as serious as it seemed. Unfortunately, anyone listening to a scanner, and not privileged to the end result, would have come to the conclusion that a major/serious crime had taken place." While it may have sounded "major and serious" on the scanner (which I had no idea about until this PL-so at least I know now that it wasn't simply a minor call on the scanner-and therefore cause for the concern I had, given this is MY backyard) the fact that this individual is "privileged" and I am not does not assure me that I was/am safe from the situation that was going down. I really do not appreciate individuals who "know" what's going on in town to feel the need to PL someone asking legitimate questions that they should feel safe because "they know" what happened and it sounded worse on the scanner than it really was.... I don't understand why people feel that it is not your business when your safety and the safety of your family is at stake. It is my business and I will get my answers. Especially now that according to one person it was a major/serious call to Vose Avenue on Saturday night |

Lucy- Please don't let a PL from someone stop you from being concerned about what is going on around you. I would want to know if something was happening in the area I live. And you did say they took away someone in cuffs! If the police didn't want people to be aware of what's going on they wouldn't encourage neighborhod watches. What was said on the scanner? If you find out from the police department today what happened, please let us know. |

Lucy, I would want to know about police activity near my house. This includes "domestic abuse situation(s)" which, contrary to what thegoodsgt said, may very well involve public crimes and are among the most dangerous for police to respond to, judges to hear (or neighbors to intervene in). Domestic abuse more often than not is a public crime: if its against the law, its against the law, period. At the same time, you might want to keep in mind that criminals can read this message board as well as the next person. |
