As several MOLers may recall, I recently posted some camera phone pix taken during my daily power-walks around town. After that posting, I did receive a number of requests to post more "positive" images of South Orange---ok, seems fair to me, so here goes---some more camera phone fun with a positive twist! So lay back, relax, have a drink, pop an atavan, whatever, and take a ride with me through beautiful downtown South Orange! A ride that will surely put a smile on your face---let's roll, SO-style!
I've posted this image before, but of course any positive discussion of South Orange has to begin with the new flower boxes outside of Bunny's. Hey, it's nice to see businesses taking pride in South Orange Avenue. Plus, with the warm weather now in place you can dine "al fresco" at Bunny's. And, since I'm not on the Chamber of Commerce, I guess I can make statements like this on MOL without getting randomly bitched at. I love America. I love the internet. And I love MOL!
OK, so how cool are the Gas Lights in South Orange? Way cool. I mean, they look great, give the town a nice, homey, authentic feel. Everyone loves the Gas Lights...
...in fact, South Orange loves the Gas Lights so much we even have a tavern named after our adorable fixtures. But, being new to town, I'm confused---what came first the tavern or the lights? I mean is the tavern named after the lights or were the lights put up in deference to the tavern? Oh well, I guess that doesn't really matter anyway---they both seem pretty cool.
Now here's something to get seriously gaga over---that's right, it's Flood's Hill sans the AK-47 floral arrangement---although some remnants still exist. Here's an idea---maybe next Memorial Day Weekend we let Flood's Hill just simply be a park? I'm not against protest and I'm definitely not pro-War but I am pro "letting a park just be a park."
Another great thing about our town is this awesome gazebo that protects you from the rain and the sun's harmful rays---oops, whoa, my bad, ok, right, let me get back on track....
Now this place looks pretty swanky! Mmm, wonder if I could get some court time on Saturday afternoon??? Also, I wonder if they even play tennis here??? Seems I'm always hearing bad cover-band overspill blaring out of this place. Nice joint to get hitched in though.
Oh well, if you can't get court time at the Orange Lawn and Tennis Club there's always these more pedestrian courts found all over South Orange. We really do have a great parks system.
And, this whole paddle tennis thing seems pretty cool. Kinda like where ping-pong, meets tennis. Nice to have paddle tennis courts in town---that's positive.
Random political signage...who doesn't love that...this is the land of the free. Here's a sign for Rich Mastrangelo I noticed near Flood's Hill. I see he is running for Essex County Sheriff---what, with the recent car-jacking on South Orange Avenue and those crazy rock-throwing hoodlums that have been attacking Dave Ross we could use some good ol' time law n' order round these parts. You go Rich!
I love our very own Mountain Station---newly refurbished and better than ever! Hey, it's only steps from my Meeker Street estate and I'm a regular on the 8:45---switch at Broad Street Newark---and I'm in the office by 9:30 most mornings---I guess it's good my boss works 3,000 miles away.
We do have a great housing stock in South Orange. Check out this killer Victorian on Meeker. Nice house and kudos to the owners. Hey, I live just down the street---maybe they could stop by and give me some decorating tips?
Alright, I admit this pic was not taken with my camera phone---but, I did have a John Davidson sighting in Sardi's a couple of weeks ago. And "JD" used to live in South Orange---so this counts as a "positive" right? Anyway, for those who might not know "JD" he is a psuedo singer, actor, television personality and former lower left-hand corner sqaure on Hollywood Squares. And, for those keeping score at home, his hair still looks great. Well, its probably clear that I've tapped the "positive" database for all I can at this point---please look for more camera phone fun in the future---in the meantime I'll try to keep a positive outlook in between frequent bouts of cynicism, scorn and random bitchiness. Have a great day! Whatever.

Actually the blue house isn't mine; but one of the others are. I can still tell you great stories about that house! If you ring his bell, I sure the owner would be happy to show you some before pictures! I learned this morning when I called my neighbor to tell him his house had the honor of making it on MOL there was a very nice story in the October 2005 issues of New Jersey Magazine. When asked why he didn't tell me he told me my mother knew. Hrmpf my mom forgets to tell me everything! BTW -they are having a 'Moving Sale' tomorrow -Friday, and Saturday. |

I went to high school with John Davidson in White Plains, NY where he lived before South Orange. He was in show biz (as a model) even at that young age which I found somwehat strange since his father was a minister. Thanks for the update. |
