Is there an official SO schedule for weekend/July 4 activities?

I hope the gang activities will be kept to a minimum this year. I heard there were a few incidents after the fireworks last year.

Fireworks are fine, but will we have the annual 'coming to America' post-bike-parade speech?

(My kids have it memorized now.)

I think Cryans has the right idea they boarded up the window outside and closed for the 4th.

Bad decision not to advertise. The organizers succeeded in keeping the "undesireables" out, but they also kept the "desireables" out as well. NO ONE IS THERE! What a dismal turnout. A few folks watching the banjo band, but that's all. Not a great 4th of July celebration.

And they screwed up on the time for the model boat show. The website says 1-4pm. We showed up at 1:30 to see them packing it all up. In reality it was 10am to 1pm. Wouldn't be so bad except that I brought my 76yr old dad out to SO specifically to see the boats.

Maybe a stealthy 4th wan't the way to go. What will the fireworks be like? One sparkler and a guy whistling the 1812 overture??

Analog, around noon I saw a lot of people there. I don't know where you were...but there were 30-40 kids watching the magic show when I was there.

I couldn't find rain date info - does anyone know if (assuming it's raining at 9 PM) the fireworks will be postponed to another night, and which one??

New --BTW, Maplewood doesn't restrict activities to residents with a ticket. Anyone is free to buy tickets. And the events are not run by the township, but rather privately by the Civic Assn. The tickets pay for the circus, fireworks, ribbons for racers, etc.

A large field in Memorial Park is screened off for the evening activities, accessible by two entrances by those holding tickets. Folks come and picnic, listen to the concert and watch fireworks. The fireworks are also visible outside of the fenced area.

I was there 1 - 1:30. Pretty dull

Fireworks were OK though, much better than the sparklers & whistler. But boy was it crowded with out-of-townies. I guess folks in the neighboring towns didn't know we weren't advertising.

Good Job S.O.! and happy 4th.

Yes, there did seem to be some out of towners, Analog, but the crowd seems peaceful and very family oriented. Heard loads of various accents and different languages being spoken and it reminded me that that is America. Nice show, nice crowd, great day!!

Great show. Given complaints concerning last year, I was expecting some kind of mayhem. Very subdued. Traffic could have used more cops at certain intersections at the end though. I like that SO is a kind of Fourth of July Mecca.

Just curious analog...how do you know who is from out of town? Is there some ID tattoo that I forgot to get? (we did notice quite a few cars driving back into Maplewood as we looped home...maybe they don't all like paying for the show there?)

Super show, large but well mannered crowd, weather that was lovely for fireworks, after worrying us earlier. Thanks to all the public servants and others who make it work.

Yuck, just drove to work and Flood Hill is awash with leftover detris and debris.

What part of the concept of carrying out what you use or bring in is so hard to understand? Saw our diligent public works people picking up all the in the pouring rain. Totally unpleasant way to end a very pleasant holiday.

Nancy;

I'm with you there!

I love the United Nations look of the SO firework display crowd, but I the remaining detritus of the event just burns my a** every time.

Granted, there are not enough available trash containers, but I somehow get the feeling that folks who are willing to leave behind their litter aren't going to change, whether trash cans are handier or not.

On the bright side, the remnants of the "gun on the hill" will now finally get picked up as well.

Big kudos to SODPW for such an excellent 4th of July! Police & fire as well - the town workers should be highly commended.

Fireworks were awesome, band excellent!

Did not seem as crowded to me as last/previous years (perhaps because of the earlier rain?).

Noticed the police presence walking through the crowd (which I don't recall from years previous).

Seemed like a much wider "no parking" zone than previous years, though. All the streets south of Wyoming closed off (used to be you could at least park on one side).

The trash thing is a mess! Noticed one of the "vendors" selling the glow sticks and similar toys, just pulling them out of the wrapper and throwing the packaging on the ground - big pile! Also some families unwrapping their food, throwing the paper behind them on the grass. What the heck kind of manners is that?!? (I'd have liked to see the police escor that guy away, I'm sure he didn't have a permit to be selling, but then perhaps those are not the kinds of things to make a scene over)

BIG kudos to the police, parks, recreation, public works -- you all made it a great, fun, safe event!

Pete

We had a great time at the fireworks! We thought it was very crowded - we were closer to the duck pond than the band - looked like a sea of people from our perspective. I was impressed with the length of the show and type of fireworks given it was a town event - very pleased.

The trash was disappointing, but people are pigs everywhere, not just in South Orange and at almost every event I've been to with large numbers of people, there's a trail of trash to follow (even theme parks). It was a chance to talk to the kids about why we don't litter and environmentality.

Bajou...the band was great. It was nice to have some real rock 'n' roll out in the park.

Pete...actually parking was permitted on one side of the streets south of Wyoming. They had "barricades" up, but the crossing guards did let people through to park.

I also thought the fireworks were great. I loved the 2nd finale!

Our only negative was when the fireworks began a guy and his pit bull parked themselves on the blanket in front of us. Every time someone walked past the dog lunged for them! The family next to them had to move for their children's safety.

#1 - What kind of dog owner would bring their pet to fireworks!

#2 - This is a park, why were they allowed to bring him in anyhow!

For next year, let's advise our police patrol to remove anyone with a dog.

PS....I thought the police did a Fabulous job with traffic and crowd control.

I saw the officer at the Maplewood Fireworks not allowing dogs in the firework area. I thought that was a good idea.
