I can't get the search function to work, so am not sure that I'm getting this right -- feel free to correct me. Wasn't Babyland the non-profit with the interesting finances that purchased a property on Scotland from the Village and flipped it for a major profit? They are the focus of an article in Thursday's Star-Ledger because they are under investigation for "fiscal mismanagement and noncompliance" and are having to close three preschools that are funded by Abbott preschool dollars. |

I'm sorry to learn this. Babyland was the daycare provider at my spouse's workplace, and both our children went there until they started school. I never looked at their balance sheet or comp figures, but we were surely impressed with how they ran that facility. Sigh. |

Nohero, thanks for finding the link after my failure...I thought that I remembered a history of unusual non-profit moves, some of them involving S.O. |

Babyland bounced 758 checks??!!!!.....incurring nearly $25,000 in bank fees for bounced checks. And this is a reputable charity? I just wonder about their connection to Dunhill Manor. What really was that all about? I wonder where the state investigation will lead. |

I just read through a lot of the links posted above. Two interesting quotations from them follow. "Babyland 'failed to maintain a financial system that provided accurate and complete disclosure.'" (Star Ledger) (Sound like another non-profit in town, like one that uses bond and HUD money illegally?) "Please don't think that Babyland Family Services is a small operator. It is closely related to New Community Corporation, a really big time state and federal aid grant player with many ties to South Orange." (Veritas Ultimo) The links provide sobering reading. The fact that the state seems to be moving to shut down Bablyland is encouraging and suggests the governor and his administration are going after these criminals. The founder of Babyland with the inflated salary lived in Livingston; the organization started in Newark. My plea to the state (and any federal) investigators: hey guys, Governor Corzine, South Orange is right next to Newark, between Livingston and Newark. Look at us. Look at us. We won't disappoint you. Our budget is bigger than Bablyland's. You can't say the amount of misdirected funds and widespread, systemic corruption isn't enough to warrant your attention. Send in the calvary. Please! Our town is what you were made for. Aside from that, does anyone know more about New Community Corporation and its connection to South Orange? |
