When purchasing my semi-annual nightly permit and July day permit at the Parking Authority yesterday I had the opportunity to speak with Mr. Hartwyck about one of my concerns. I park in the 2nd street parking lot - the closest one to my apartment, but still a good block and a half walk. It's listed as lots 5 & 9 on the map on the Parking Authority page as Permit Only for Daytime Resident Commuters and Day & Night Residents, however, the majority of cars parked in that lot between 6pm and 2am don't have permits. I asked Mr. Hartwyck why the lot wasn't monitered - couldn't they make a lot of money off of that? His reply was that the lot was utilized by local restaurants during those hours. So I ask, "So it's not a permit-only lot then?" His reply, "Well, it is, but overnight enforcement doesn't start until 2am." He reminded me that permits are not lot-specific and that there are other lots in the village that I can park in that aren't too far. While any other lot would be an even bigger inconvenience to me, especially when coming home with laundry/groceries/etc. (I'd have to walk about 2 blocks, including crossing S.O. Ave), he does have a point. So, should I be bothered by the fact that this "permit only" lot is giving away free spots during prime time parking hours while I'm paying over $100 a year for one, or should I just let it go? (And just on a side note - I'll admit that I sometimes give the PA a hard time, but it's only because it's frustrating when they're inconsistent, however, Neva Sparlin in the PA office is always a pleasure to deal with, she's friendly, helpful and informative, probably the only good thing they have going for them.) |

You say the issue is the time from 6 p.m. until 2 a.m., and then refer to that as "prime parking hours." Those aren't prime parking hours for commuters, who I would imagine are the owners of the bulk of parking permits. The big NJ Transit lot is entirely free after 2 p.m.

Monty, they are the bulk of the commuter lot permits, but are they the bulk of the resident lot permits? Many of the lots that are reserved for residents are not exactly convenient for commuters. besides, someone who drives to work would consider 6pm and on to be prime parking hours. that's when they get home and want to park. |

Rastro - Bingo. I'm not a train commuter, as I stated in my original post, the lot is for Day Commuters and Day & Night Residents who aren't lucky enough to have parking of their own. Slim Jim - I was going to put that originally, but didn't want to start, but since you mentioned it, I do often see people leaving Cryans and getting into their cars in this "permit only" lot. I also had a confrontation with a young man once when he took the last available spot in the lot and didn't have a permit. He said he had to park there because he was going to work (looked like a waiter), I told him it was permit only, he said he was told that it was only until 5pm. I asked him to read the signs (of which there are very few, and they're small and not well placed) and he just walked away, though I did not notice which local restaurant he went into. It's just a peeve of mine, I guess I really could have just posted it as a vent in the Soapbox. I suppose I have no choice but to expand my parking spot search to other distant lots. |

If the parking authority is not going to enforce permit parking, why bother getting a permit? Or is it not enforced for a privileged few and their employees? |

I spend about $130 a year in permits, I think tickets for parking in a permit lot without a permit are $45, so even if the lot was enforced only three times over the course of the year, I'm still saving money ($5) by buying a permit. Sometimes it does feel pointless though. |

Park under the gazebo. According to some people, no one uses it. |

Has anyone heard if the security cameras over some of the lots work? Especially with SOPAC opening soon, it is essential that visitors and residents alike shouldn't be worried if their car will be there when they return from a meal or entertainment. Leave a bad impression and people won't come back.
