This was in yesterday's Ledger- North Jerseyans cheer on Italian soccer team Fans watching the Italian soccer team's first World Cup final appearance since 1994 will have plenty of company in Newark today. Beginning at 11 a.m., Bloomfield Avenue will be closed from North 12th Street to Heckel Street and rechristened Azzuri Boulevard for the team that hasn't won a World Cup since 1982. The traditional jersey color of the national team is blue, or azzurro in Italian, thus the national team members are nicknamed the Azzurri. A television truck - similar to ones used in New York City for moving advertisements - will broadcast the 2 p.m. game against France live in the street while the surrounding restaurants and Italian social clubs will offer free food, beverages and, of course, Italy's world-renowned hospitality. "We're trying to give everything free: food, beer, water," said Luigi Siconolfi, owner of Luigi's, one of the restaurants laying out the red carpet. "We don't want ... vendors coming in to charge all our friends. We're going to do everything ourselves and hopefully we get a victory." The road closure was approved by County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo Jr., who decided to shut down the major county thoroughfare after sensing the excitement running through the Italian community. Though Newark's North Ward is no longer the Italian enclave it used to be, DiVincenzo said he hoped the game would bring former residents like himself back to the old neighborhood. "There's so much excitement. The people, it's all they're talking about," DiVincenzo said. "It's going to be great. Go Italy!" Fans are encouraged to bring their own chairs because the county will only be setting up about 200 in front of the television. Siconolfi said people are also welcome to drop off donations of beer and other beverages. Jerry Robertiello of Casa Intermezzo said he and the other restaurant owners will take care of the rest. "We're going to put out the bread, they're bringing the TV, so we should be all set," Robertiello said as a team of county workers hung a 75-foot Italian flag across Bloomfield Avenue. "We're trying to bring whole community together over here," Siconolfi added. "I think it's one of best things that's ever happened." While the impromptu block party is geared toward Italian soccer die-hards, organizers stressed that everyone is invited. Everyone except the French fans, of course. Contributed by Jonathan Casiano I feel the last comment wasn't very nice. It spoiled the mood of the article for me. Maybe he could have said "Everyone is invited. Even the French..." GO ITALY! Goog luck France! |

Italy wins on penalty kicks. Probably justified since they had a goal called back on a very questionable offsides call and the penalty kick call was similarly questionable. |
