And will the theater with the stage, and the event rooms smell like popcorn from the movie theater? |

I have been wondering why we are not outsourcing the management of the live theater portion as well as the event room, much as we are outsourcing the management of the movie sections to Clearview. We woiuld then have a more consistent revenue stream garnered by management fees paid to the village, and it would free the village of having to hire staff, marketing the facilities, etc. The village should not be in these businesses. |

Apparently, jayjay, SO's leaders haven't heard of the NJ-NY Port Authority which finally leased the WTC to a real estate manager, since they decided they shouldn't be in that business either. |

We could just gut the state of the art interior and turn it into a parking deck, or course then it would have been cheaper to just make it that from the start, but, "Who cares! It's only money and it's not coming out of our pockets!" says the board. |

Is there any way for the residents of a town to hold its board legally responsible for fiscal mismanagement? |

Does anyone besides me think that SOPAC (as well as Tau) could be analagous to AutoWorld in the film "Roger and Me?" |

They should hire Julie from Sweet Concessions to run the catering part of SOPAC. She has mega experience with this! |

Why would we want a caterer on the town payroll? My impression was that they will rent out the room to a party who would then bring in their own caterer, but I could be wrong. In any event, it makes me nervous to think about the village or a SOPAC board or whoever managing this operation. Volunteers could be well intentioned but this requires more than good intentions. We have a lot riding on this, and if it doesn't make money, we're all on the hook for it. |

Neen, the only way I know to hold the BOT responsible for fiscal mismanagement is to vote them out of office. Perhaps an attorney could figure out a way to sue them. |

I just cleaned out a drawer & came across an old "Gaslight" from January 1998 announcing the results of the community survey measuring "residents entertainment interests and the feasibility of building a performing arts center". The one piece of information that was so shocking to me was that according to the article, 377 residents responded to the survey. 377! Just 377 people determined the need for us to have SOPAC. I just find that very interesting in retrospect. The other funny line from the article says "Once begun, fund-raising could extend for 18 months. Construction is not likely until 1999." |

Any attorneys out there who would like to take on the pro bono work of suing the board of South Orange for fiscal mismanagement? |

377 in favour and they build SOPAC. 1700 and climbing against tax dollars for tau and they ignore it. My maths teacher must have been teaching me wrongly all those years ago.. |

Shouldn't the huge expenditure for SOPAC have been placed on a ballot referendum for the voters to decide? Of course, with the number of people who actually turn out to vote in this town, it just may have passed (despite being the worst idea since buying ShopRite)! |

SOP, Just to be clear - as I recall the wording of the article, 377 people responded, but it didn't say how many were in favor of SOPAC! |

377 people (less, given that some may be not be "valid") and the BOT adds $14-$15 million to SO's debt for SOPAC. Over 1700 voters, and they go from adding one indeterminate amount of debt ($400,000-$600,000+) to another indeterminate amount ($170,000?) to SO's debt for Tau, while drawing up more secret plans about its location after the first secret plan was exposed and arrested. Whatever the number of people involved, whether they are in favor or against, the BOT keeps to its course of borrowing and borrowing and borrowing, just like the State of New Jersey did for years. The present governor may get NJ out of debt, but it will be very difficult given the amount of injury. A new BOT elected next spring may halt SO's increasing debt and start the arduous and multi-year task of getting the town out of debt. If people vote in the elections next May, that is. |

Lets do the math $13 million (a little rounding among friends never hurt) 377 "for" SOPAC (more or less) = $34,500 (rounded of course) When are the checks coming in?? /p |

Waiting for a miracle, Joel? Heck, I'll be the first to cheerlead their re-election campaign if they start making decisions that put the village first. They can take that to an American bank. |

Joel - I saw you at the Meeting on TV. Did the groundhogs ever come out of Closed Session to see their shadows, or will it be 6 more years of Beifus? Dave - they DO put the Village first. First in number of vacant lots. First in debt. First in high taxes, etc etc. |

MHD, I left the TV on the entire time. Around 9:30, I think, I saw BC come out of the meeting, walk up the aisle. At that time, someone turned the lights off, then the TV went black.

Peter- I think the SOPCA checks and Tau checks must all be getting lost in the mail. That must be what's happening because afterall, we all know that most of the town support both these projects! |

Does anyone know what is up with the windows that keep being broken at SOPAC? Previosuly, I had noticed the FRONT windows that were broken & today, I first noticed the windows closest to the train tracks were broken. Are these windows being broken as a result of construction or vandalism? If it is the latter, what is the plan to prevent this once the facility opens? |

MHD, Also, looks like some of the local hoodlums have already begun tagging the SOPAC area---I've seen some graffiti that seems to read "casa" or something like that---as you point out South Orange will need a plan to make sure these creeps don't continue to randomly bust windows and tag SOPAC---this is a huge investment for our town, so hopefully we'll be able to keep it in pristine condition. |

Somebody who is overseeing the construction from the SOPAC Board (if there is someone)ought to find out from the architect what sort of glass was spec-ed, and if the right glass has been installed. I find it hard to understand why the glass which forms a major portion of the exterior of the building would be so prone to shattering. |
