Rastro, the Beacon gets some great acts in there. I understand that, SOPAC is no MSG, no Beacon, no NJPAC, and so where does that leave it? The bottom. |

Pdg, I do not literally hope that it fails. Yes, it is too late now. They never should have built it in the first place. Yes more parking is needed. I will be there laughing as yo-yo ma has to park at the maplewood train station and take the train to get to his performace. |

Jeff Daniels? He does stand-up? Eh? I did not know that. Unless this is another Jeff Daniels we are talking about. |

Mayor: I think that your comments (about having so little interest or knowledge of most of the performers listed) say a lot more about you and your cultural horizons than about the acts themselves. I love John Pizzarelli, and can't wait to buy tkts! |

I don't think it is just me sratching my head about why these people are playing at SOPAC. And what are you trying to say? That I have good taste, or that my taste and your taste are different? Because if people who are different from you scare you and you think that they are wrong for being different then you are nothing but a hateful person. |

I'm still laughing about when some guys stole Matt Foley's idea for a game of croquet, and used it as a fundraiser for SOPAC. I'm glad they raised some money, but you'd think they would try for some originality. |

I will second (ot third or fourth) the feeling that I have either not heard of any of these people nor would I be interested in seeing the ones I have heard of. So far, very disappointing and I don't see this line-up as able to generate the type of revenue or enthusiasm SOPAC will need to succeed. |

MHD, Thanks for catching my bad proofreading...I meant to say SOPAC, not BOT. I thought that the SOPAC board actually did a rather good update (and acknowledged that they won't be self supporting for a few years, but are trying). They could save themselves a lot of trouble if they spoke to the public more frequently. You are quite right that the BOT did precious little updating on anything of substance. The best that I can say there is that, in the portion of the meeting that I watched (up to about 11 PM), they were more respectful and responsive to the public than usual...nothing for my hypothetical BOT greatest hits video up through the start of remonstrances (I'll watch the rest later!) |

Thanks for clarifying, Susan. During the remonstrances, you have GOT to watch the 2nd non-apology from Calabrese when Leslie Pogany addressed him directly last night. His complete lack of any remorse is really shameless. |

MHD, I agree. You'd think that he would at least let her finish speaking before he made an out of himself. But no, he tried his best to interrupt her so that she couldn't call him out. I can't believe that during her time to speak she actually had to ask him to be quiet to finish her sentence. |

To the schedule malcontents...we each have six acts that we would most love to see? So drop SOPAC an email and let them know your list. If anyone loves their whole list, it probably means that the programming is way too narrow-cast! For me part of the hoped-for joy of having an arts center close to home is that it increases the likelyhood that I'll actually get out the door and stretch my mind by seeing some acts that I don't already know well, as well as an occasional one that is already on my short list. |

Susan, I am not looking for 6 acts I like. Just 1 act that I would say isn't too bad in the first few months. Yet, with a site this small and so much competition in the area that is not possible. And that is reflected in the acts that are booked. |

Watching the video of the end of the Meeting last night & just noticed that there was a person who phoned in to the Meeting last night on the EXACT same subject of the original post in this thread. What a coincidence! Too bad his question was played after 12:30am, when everyone from SOPAC had already gone home. |

When I saw Soda's post about the SOPAC schedule thusfar I was floored. I had no idea the place would get shows of this caliber. Pizzarelli is magnificent. Poundstone is hysterical. I think it's VERY exciting for South Orange. |

"for Mayor McCheese...the types of acts being booked for SOPAC are obviously aimed at a sophisticated audience." Are you trying to say that you are sophisticated because you listen to one of these acts? Well, infer what you may by this, but those who claim to be sophisticated in the arts are merely presumptuous pompous persons who in fact have no taste or class. The real question here is, will anyone actually go to any of these shows? I think not. |

From a Times review of John Pizzarelli: "A master guitarist, connoisseur of songs, mimic and storyteller, he embodies the concept of fluidity: everything comes out of everything else. His artistic headstream is his guitar; it is his alter ego, his ventriloquist's dummy, his best friend and his spiritual connection rolled into one. "The high points of any Pizzarelli concert are the moments when he and his instrument fuse in a machine-gun fire of single-note riffs simultaneously picked and vocalized. As the voice and guitar hurtle together in a neck-and-neck race to the finish line, his singing acquires the inflections and accents of the instrument driving it." And from a Times review of Bill Charlap: "The pianist Bill Charlap is a more recent addition to those ranks, but he's hardly a newcomer; Thursday marked his 11th Highlights in Jazz appearance. He fits the series almost too perfectly, with a blend of precision, erudition and selfless bonhomie — qualities that have come in handy since last summer, when he assumed artistic directorship of another longstanding series, Jazz in July at the 92nd Street Y. "The trio — Mr. Charlap, Peter Washington on bass and Kenny Washington (no relation) on drums — worked in a crisp professional mode without succumbing to rigidity or gloss. At times, their unflappable cool was unnerving. Mr. Charlap's arrangement of 'In the Still of the Night' kept a breakneck pace, testing the musicians' graceful athleticism; the result was less like a high-wire act than a figure-skating routine. Only with 'Cool,' from Leonard Bernstein's 'West Side Story,' did everyone let loose; the composition's formal twists and built-in swagger elicited a standout performance." You don't have to like them, but I'm impressed that SOPAC was able to land such top-notch performers before it even opens.

Not to mention our own hometown favorite chanteuse... TIME OUT May 8, 2006 The Lyric - Jim Tomlinson featuring Stacey Kent TIME OUT May 8, 2006 Rating: **** This Getz-ish tenorist is probably best known as the musical and life partner of graceful US expat singer Stacey Kent; though this is nominally his album, it’s dominated by her voice. Like Diana Krall, Kent takes beautiful standards and gently unfurls their lyrics; and the supremely empathetic understanding she shares with Tomlinson recalls the sublime beauty of Billie Holiday’s recordings with Lester Young. Timeless, artful and utterly gorgeous. -- Kerstan Mackness,

SOPAC Rule #1: If an act is of dubious quality, "nobody" will go to see said act, and the theater will be physically devoid of all people. SOPAC Rule #2: If Mayor McCheese hasn't heard of an act, it is by definition of dubious quality. SOPAC Rule #3: Since the facility should never have been built, even acts that Mayor McCheese has heard of will be reduced in stature proportionally, should they ever be booked to appear at SOPAC, to the status of dubious quality.

argon, you don't have to agree with me on this board. Your actions will agree with me a year after SOPAC opens and you still haven't gone to see a show there. And you won't be the only one. People on this thread are bashing me for really saying the truth. Some of the acts that are booked are really not very well known, and some of them are just bad. I'm sorry if you happen to like one of these acts, and are offended by my comments. But if I were to walk around SO and show people this lineup and ask if they had any interest in going to see any of these acts the answer would be no. Don't hate the messanger, hate the message. |

The acts are selected to appeal to an older audience (eg. older than Mayor McC) with the disposable funds to pay for a few tickets and dinner out. Among that demographic, the acts are well known and they won't have trouble selling tickets. If bigger names were brought in (and I'm not even sure what or who that would mean), there would be an issue with the size of the venue and having to make ticket prices too high to pay the talent. |

Is it possible Mayor just likes to stir things up? I'm a long time resident of SO, and I'm very much looking forward to going there often. It will be a very intimate comfortable place to see lots of quality entertainment. Just because none of these acts suit your fancy doesn't mean no performers there ever will. I'm also guessing people from surrounding towns will come to see those performers that interest them. Mayor, I'm curious, who would YOU like to see there? Anyone? |

If I don't go to a show it will be because I can't get a babysitter, not because I never saw or heard of the act before. And I'm actually probably more likely to go see a performer I've never heard of before. And what I'm "attacking" is the idea that SOPAC can't act as an incubator for up and coming artists that you've never heard of, but will only succeed if it books acts which are already well known. The people of this community are not on the whole some bunch of dunderheaded sheep who only know how to consume mass quantities of prepackaged entertainment 'content.' Clearly a mix of both well known and lesser known acts will be ideal, but you're never going to get Styx to headline the SOPAC... oh wait maybe someday that could be possible... but would you want it????

Exactly, dave23. Mayor, try again. It will be fun to hear who else you would like to see there. I live in Maplewood and am thrilled for South Orange to have a venue where high quality acts will perform. Who want acts that fill stadiums or large theaters? Who wants acts that appeal to a younger, mass-oriented crowd? This is South Orange, not Las Vegas. SOPAC will be special, you wait and see. |

I saw DB at the Supper Club in NYC. I was so close to him I could see the piece of masking tape with "David" written on it stuck to his mic stand, and could hear his unamplified voice as loud as his amplified voice... it was great. Would he play SOPAC? I think he could, if the place gave him the right vibe. And I think the right vibe would be, it was acting as an incubator for up and coming artists who were a bit out of the mainstream.

(I posted a comment like this elsewhere) Not fer nuttin', but the South Orange website need some serious help. I don't know why we don't have updates on the website with any regularity. I get, and I think a lot of us get all up to date information from the web (not from a monthly leaflet)
