Silly Matt - you're supposed to COOL the water before making lemonade!

Mark - thanks for passing on the information. I guess I just expect too much from the town. I expect that if you pay for something, tout a new system that could make residents lives easier, it works. Not that there are a new set of excuses as to why it can't/doesn't/won't. Or who is responsible for why it doesn't work.

Having lived through water main breaks and had the town tape notes to the affected doors and on the businesses in town saying that there had been a major water main break, the water may run brown but it was harmless, and oh, by the way, here's a bottle of iron out in the event you were doing laundry (this was left inside my door). Here's who you call to get more information. Sorry for the inconvenience. THIS is what I would have expected from the South Orange Village Administration. Not having to happen to open a post on a chat board and read that my water may be contaminated.

So now my question is, if Verizon is the holdup, how long have they been holding the town hostage on this system, and when do we expect to have the system up and running? And when is the date to suck it up to a bad decision and actually do the work of inputing the 6000 numbers? (which, by the way, I still don't get. Shouldn't that be a database that's available to download and import to the "system"?)

Gotta love these Ross Brothers, eh?

Our household is also suffering from the low pressure, brownish water delivery. And I am equally stymied by the lack of reverse 911 ability in our town. I'm no wizard, but don't the police already have some type of connection with the telephone system that they are able to identify every incoming 911 call? So, since we *bought* and, oh yeah, *paid* for the software, why aren't we able to use it in this potentially serious health situation?

How are we supposed to know when our water is safe?

Mark - I don't mean to nitpick, but wasn't the reverse 911 system used a couple months ago when the shooting occurred?

Why does Maplewood, Livingston, West Orange, and Short Hills all have reverse 911 and we don't?

I didn't get Dave's email about the water problem, nor did I get a phone call about the shooting. Dang.

New Jersey American Water Supplies South Orange With Water During Water Main Break
Wednesday August 9, 5:17 pm ET

ESSEX COUNTY, N.J., Aug. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- New Jersey American Water has begun supplying potable water to the residents of South Orange, New Jersey, after the City of East Orange's Water Department, which supplies water to South Orange, experienced a main break. For the next 16-24 hours, New Jersey American water will be supplying up to 1,600 gallons per minute of potable drinking water to the residents of South Orange. In response to a request by the City of South Orange, New Jersey American Water opened up two interconnections with the City of East Orange Water Department's system in order to supply the water.

"New Jersey American Water is very pleased to be able to supply water to the residents of South Orange in their time of need," said Walter Lynch, President of New Jersey American Water. "As the state's largest water purveyor, we are proud to offer our assistance whenever another purveyor is experiencing difficulties supplying their customers with clean, potable water," Lynch continued.

New Jersey American Water is the state's largest water utility serving over two million people in 176 communities throughout the state. The company is a wholly owned subsidiary of American Water, the largest and most geographically diversified provider of water services in North America. Headquartered in Voorhees, NJ, American Water employs approximately 7,000 dedicated people who serve over 18 million in 29 states and 3 Canadian provinces. More information can be found by visiting http://www.amwater.com.

Still no updates from the town. I know that the roads are still closed, and I know what Nancy posted above. Water looks less grey, but a real status update is way overdue.

It is a real shame when private posters on MOL are a far better source of information than our elected and/or paid town officials. Who in Village Hall is responsible for keeping us informed, and what the heck is that person doing yesterday and today? If they can't get out simple updates, then I've got a candidate for tax savings.

Telling us all to call East Orange Water is not enough. The town should be calling them and making sure that regular updates are available, at least to those of us who use the town website. (I'm not going to touch the topic of the reverse 911 system!). Would we do better if this were an actual emergency?

Does the government of South Orange have a responsibility to ensure that residents are informed about emergency situations? In my opinion, YES. Where is the accountability here? My job has accountability and some of it involves 24/7 maintenance. Many times I am here late, I work from home during my off hours, I make sure that any operations directly under my control are running smoothly.

Who is responsible in South Orange? Who is accountable?

The sad answer to that question, in every context in which it has been asked, is no one. No one sees themselves as responsible and accountable for the state of our town.

Typically, utilities are responsible for alerts and communications with customers. The whole point of privatizing them is to remove tasks from government.

Called the health department and was told to contact East Orange Water. Asked about traffic situation and was directed to contact the DPW. I then asked about the website content being outdated and was told that I'd be transferred to the clerk's office. Clerk transferred me to Laura Harris (VA assistant). Laura's assistant transferred me to the IT guy Mauricio (very nice guy) who was surprised to see a page posted by someone other than he.

In a nutshell, the problem has been fixed and the roads re-opened.

Oh, and I never received a return call from the message I left for the village administrator yesterday.

Well, they've finally put a minor update on the website...letting us know that repairs were completed at 9 PM last night. For a water quality (and potential safety) issue, a 14 hour delay is not acceptable. Neither is buck passing about who has the responsibility to inform residents about town problems.

Dave, it may be the utility's responsibility to communicate, but then it is the town's responsibility to make sure that it is done in a timely and acceptable fashion. This has failed in this instance. The town and the utility need to answer for this, and put better mechanisms in place ASAP.

Funny what this little blurb in today's Ledger says:

Water main break shuts road
Thursday, August 10, 2006
A water main break at South Ridgewood Road and West Third Street in South Orange yesterday morning closed South Ridgewood Road for several hours until the break could be repaired.

South Orange Police Chief Jim Chelel said the break occurred about 7:30 a.m. and required police to close Ridgewood Road from Walton Road to South Orange Avenue. He said some buildings were without water and others had decreased water pressure, though residents were not told to take any precautions when using tap water.

Chelel said water company work crews were called to the scene and expected to continue repairing the water main last night. Catherine Memory, a spokeswoman at Seton Hall University, reported no complaints from staff on the campus yesterday, though it was initially believed that the break had interrupted water service to the university.

Chelel said there were no inju ries or evacuations from the water main break.

(Did you catch it?)

As of 8:45 this morning, the road closures had *increased* from yesterday (and from the scope reported in the Village's Alert), to include Edgewood Terrace, part of Walton and the part of S. Ridgewood from Rynda to the blinker at Walton.

Any definitive word on whether those roads are still closed?

The disturbing truth is that no one in village hall is ultimately accountable for the public's best interest. And it is virtually certain that in a real health or other kind of emergency, it would be even worse. The reverse 911 non-system the town has bought says it all.

The BOT is accountable to the voters however and is suppose to supervise the town administration. Where are they? What have they done? Little to nothing of what is needed.
