My car was towed yesterday from the SO nj transit lot to the dealer. So I had a rental vehicle today. Got a $45 ticket surprise when I got home from work today(in addition to a $300 repair and $37 car rental). Seems adsurd to say the least. The hang tag specifically says "this permit entitles the holder to park in the nj transit lot." No where on the hang tag or on the permit application does it say anything about not being able to use the hang tag on only 1 vehicle. Anyone else run into this? Pete

I think you should call the Parking Authority tomorrow and explain your situation (973-378-7715 x2037). I'll bet they rescind the ticket since you have a legitimate excuse (at least I'd hope so!). |

Its been a rough few weeks -- I left the train lot, picked up my fixed car, then drove 1 hour+ to see my Dad (82 years old, had open heart surgery, now in rehab until he can be on his own). Just got home a few minutes ago -- the last thing I need!. I've had my car fixed before, put a "post it" on the window with the permit # and that my car was being fixed (on the rental). Never a problem. (before the hang tags) I had no reason to think that using the hang tag on another car would be a problem. Come on, why would the parking authority issue hang tags (vs a sticker) if if wasn't meant to be moved? If the permit is tied to a specific vehicle -- then it should be a sticker?!? Jeff -- any words of wisdom here! Thanks, Pete |

Pete I hope your Dads recouperation goes well. Re the hang tags, I know that when we got ours, Neva Sparlin told me that the ONLY car it could be used on was the car that matched the plate No. on the hang tag, and since Hubby switches cars, she put both numbers on the tag. I am sure that they will be sympathetic to your case (or at least I hope they will!) |

Soparents -- Thanks for the info - that's not what I recall from my January call to the parking authority (but I wouldn't bet my mortgage on it!). I thought it was part of the reason they were switching to hang tags! Pete |

Pete, I hope your Dad recovers fully and lives to a ripe triple-digit age! I think the SOPA will respectfully rescind the ticket and advise you on how to deal with the occasional rental in the future. I'd be surprised to hear otherwise. Hang in there. Bets |

Peter I'm so sorry to read this. With all that's happening in your life right now the last thing you needed was a ticket. As the others have said, give the Parking Authority a call. Explain the situation to them. I agree with your logic about being able to use the permit on more then one car; which is why hang tags are used. I hope your father is feeling better. I'm sure he was glad to see you. |

Pete, your dad is in my thoughts! On the occassion that I've received a ticket illegitimately, Neva has been quite good in having it recinded. I know you are under a lot of stress, but I think a phone call in the morning followed by a fax of the ticket will take care of it. Stay strong! |

Yes, hopefully the SOPA will help sort things out. Sorry about all the stress. I suspect that we have to have the hang tags coded to the cars we own to prevent misuse. What do you think a S.O. parking pass NOT coded to a specific car or cars would go for on the open market? |

I asked when I got the permit if I could switch cars (sometimes my neighbor, who rides with me, might drive). they told me it would be okay to switch. if fact, she said that's one of the reasons they went with the hang tags. (also because they're easier for the enforcement officers to see.) maybe they changed the policy? certainly seems like there's more room for abuse with the hang tags than with the stickers. |

Hi Pete, I think I saw the guy ticketing your car yesterday around 12:45 PM. They were out in full force (saw 3 officers). I park in the same lot and I notice one of the officers ticketing a car with a hang tag and was wondering why. In the case such as yours, alert the Parking Authority before to avoid this. I had a case similar to yours and we went to the PA to let them know that we were using a different car. We gave them the "discription" of the car and we had no problems. Hope your Dad is doing okay. |

Thanks, I sent an email to Mark Hartwyck last night -- if he doesnt respond (I don't know how often he checks his email) I'll follow up with a call and fax. I have to say, my interactions with the folks at SOPA have always been cordial and helpful. The more I thought about it -- there is absolutely no information provided to permit holders -- either explicit or implict -- that says you can't switch tags between cars, not on the application, not on the hang tag, not on the web site. Funny, I recall when SOPA gave out stickers that a number of people didn't actually attach them to the window, but put them in small plastic pouches attached to their window. Wouldn't the only reason for doing so be to switch between cars? The rental car I had was a GMC Yukon (the size of a bus!)-- I was wondering if my large vehicle might have prompted a "look see" by the officers! But I guess they were checking in the lot overall. My Dad is getting better (home from rehab maybe tomorrow!), I have my car back from the shop, and slowly the "bumps" of this summer will fade. (this one is just *so* annoying!) Thanks all for the words -- Pete |

Pete, hope things are going well for your dad! Just personally, I'd run this past Neva rather than (or in addition to) Mark, she being the one "on the ground" and easily available by phone. 973-378-7715 x2037 |

Susan, low to mid four figures? Pete, I believe rental cars have license plates from special number series. Police and parking agents know the sequences. This probably is what brought attention to your oversized ride. Hang in there with your Dad. I hope he continues to do well. |
