I feel ridiculous doing this but oh well...

So I'm moving into a new house with 3 of my friends and we're trying to figure out costs of things.

Can anyone give me a ballpark figure on:

Electric?
Gas?
Water?
Garbage?

It's a relatively big place with a lot of room.

We're doing a one year lease to see how it all works out.

If you have any other recommendations - please feel free to shoot it my way...

elect. any elect. heat? central air or window units?
gas - will you heat with gas? type of heating system? (steam, hot water baseboard, forced hot air?
Water - probably around 120.00 per quarter
Garbage - I think I pay 62.00 every two months?

You can probably get elect and gas estimates from PSE&G, based on history of the house, unless when you said new house, you meant new construction?

If the house is new construction, fully insulated etc, very few people in this town have similar enough conditions to compare with.

Sheena, I think you can call the utility companies and get records of bills for the last year or at least monthly averages (like average in winter and av. in summer). You need to keep in mind which utilities you use more during which seasons. Remember the size of previous household vs. yours and calculate accordingly. You should be able to enroll in a level payment plan for utilities; they average and charge flat rate each month.

Water is based on consumption but there are two expenses: water and sewer, in and out.

I have gas boiler and find that burning wood in the winter is less expensive than using the boiler all the time, especially if you read or work around the fireplace in the evening. A programmable thermostat is worth the investment if you want to keep your bills down. Turn down when you're not there, at night, etc. Blanket (kit you buy) on water heater, insulation on hot water pipes, weather stipping and caulking also helps. Others can tell you more.

Welcome to SO, the town.

I'm not sure how crazy the landlord would be about tenants insulating pipes, weatherstripping, caulking, etc. I would check before doing any kind of improvement that normally would be the option of the owner.

Okay - you guys are great! My roomate just called PSE&G and we got the breakdown of how much the gas/electric was & thanks for the numbers posted here for garbage and water.

I'm so pathetic... I'm the only recent grad who refuses to leave S.O. because I don't want my voter residency to change, lol. I can't wait to put up my first political law sign in my own yard (tear).

Thanks for the help again and I'll be letting you all know of my first official tea party/discussion on S.O. issues meeting

FYI, using a water heater blanket can void the warranty on the water heater.

Wow - thanks for the nice words

Dearest Soda - must you still refer to me as 'kiddo'? I thought we grew past that. Oh well, I suppose I'll still invite you to my first tea party...

And I think we're opting for the electric heaters - after some investigating, gas bills are CRAZY...

(thanks Alison - Anthony in Hoboken is killer - can do awesome highlights like no other)

But anyways, I'm back... again..... the moving week of hell is whoopin' me. I'm a bit black and blue and have a whole new respect for 'movers' and those with severe lower back pain....

To the point, another question - we have tons and tons of trash and boxes, etc. from our 'transition' - what do I do with all that stuff? And what day is trash picked up?

Oh my gosh I'm such a 5 year old...

Oh yeah - and Cablevision had me waiting for 8 hours two days ago.... to setup cable and internet (yeah... I was without MOL for a couple days... scary - I feel like I've missed out on the town gossip... need to go read the other threads).

Okay if anyone can help me out with the trash question - would greatly appreciate it

Sheena--

Trash day depends on where in town you live. South Orange Disposal is 973-762-3880; they can give you the details on that piece of it, and can also advise whether they can haul away extra boxes (and whther there is an additional fee involved).

You can take the boxes to the recycling center. As for the trash...put it out and see if Waste Management picks it up. They usually do.

On another note...I swear you moved on our block.
