What local cat groomers would be willing & able to remove these from the rear end of our feisty furbearing friend???

ohmygod! This happened to our Akita and it was nightmare trying to get them out. Since his fur is very thick, we just pulled them out. It didn't seem to hurt him much --- I think! -- but it pulled quite a bit of hair out in the process. Good luck :-(

You know Soda, perhaps if you used a baby wipe or something gentle of that nature to pull them out, it won't be so bad?

Thanks to all for the DIY suggestions, but I'm afraid we're really looking to outsource this one. Recommendations of compassionate, reliable, fearless local cat groomers will be much appreciated.

Try Puppy Love on Springfield Ave in Maplewood. I've had a few experiences with my Persians requiring them to be hosed down in the shower from explosive diarrhea. Baby wipes work well for most, though.

In the 4 months or so since I've been posting on MOL this ranks as by far the most disturbing thread.

Steve,

When I first looked at the thread I thought it said female dingleberry removal. I still have no idea what a dingleberry is and wondered if I had one.

I was somewhat relieved to see that I had read it wrongly.

I still don't know what a dingleberry is though.

Soparents,

I (and I'm sure many other MOLers) am quite relieved that you do not suffer from this malady.

That said, I'm thinking its probably a good time to move on and forget that this thread ever happened.

Memo to self: If I ever get a pet, especially a cat, keep it the hell away from SODA.

Ummm... Soda, I've had very good luck with the groomers at Summit Dog & Cat Hospital. One of my 4-legged ones is a Maine Coon wannabe with a frequent dingleberry problems, so I sympathize.

As a seasoned diaper changer I can tell you it is not.

I would rather change a poopy diaper than read this thread.

Whoo!

I love that the term "dingleberry" is being used.

I doubt hand wipes are going to work if the berry is dried and entangled.

People please, a dingleberry discussion is far less offensive than some of the stuff I've read in MOL's Politics thread.

You should see the dingleberries a cow gets!

Since no-one here chose to englighten me as to the nature of a dingleberry I had to google it.

And there was me thinking it was something totally different.

Soda, just wear gloves....

I have a question for Mergele: Having just buried two old, dear cats in six months, I am currently living in a pet free zone.
I have begun to fantasize about owning a Maine Coon cat. Your remark gives me pause, however.
My home is hair free, hairball discharge free, litterbox free, and dingelberry free. (The last cat felt free to rid himself of difficult eliminations by just dropping them off wherever he had the impluse - you wouln't believe some of his spots!)
Now you mention the breed I have been thinking about. What are some positives about Maine Coons you can share?

Well, The Molly Machine isn't any sort of papered, official Maine Coon; she came from a rescue in CT. She does however have the same luxurious coat, enormous feet (really! they're huge!), fluffy tufts between her toes, and glorious plume of a tail... She is the sweetest of my current four, but far from the brightest. Loves people ... And as a female red tabby, she's essentially a freak of nature.

On the down side, although she's a world-champion groomer, she does need regular brushing in the summer to keep from matting up. And even with regular grooming, she still produces world-class hairballs.

I just lost my Old Guy in April, mtierney. My sincerest condolences on the loss of yours. I had 4 others at home, and while there are certainly times that the fantasy of a pet free zone is very appealing, I can't imagine living without them.

I've had two wonderful Maine Coons. Having had cats all my life (currently have eight), and being involved in rescue for more than seven years, I can honestly say that these two are the greatest cats I've ever encountered. I acquired them from my sister when her husband decided he had an allergy. I took them temporarily while he started and quickly stopped taking allergy shots (nine years and counting). Both males-- one was orange, the other is smoke. Very different personalities, but fantastic. Weekly brushing is needed, expect shedding, and I rarely have a problem with dingleberries. Unfortunately, the orange one, the larger of the two at nineteen pounds developed a very rare cancer and I lost him two years ago at age 9. His brother, now 11, has recently developed some type of kidney disease that we are unable to classify (not chronic renal failure). I would recommend Maine Coons to anyone. But adopt them from a shelter/rescue group. You'll find plenty on petfinder.com. pic
