As someone who used to commute into the city, I know this has been a common question. I used to have a permit for the NJ transit lot but switched jobs to work more local and gave that up. Now I just got offered a job back in the city. If I accept it, I'll be taking the PATH train to 14th street. I am assuming now that the quickiest route is the train from SO to Hoboken and take the PATH from there. Problem of course now is parking. How reliable is the Jitney? Looking for any other ideas about parking or other suggestions for a better commute. Thanks! |

Try the Mountain Station, which I believe has a much shorter waiting list for parking than the SO station. Trains from Mountain Station run to Hoboken. In addition, there is "daily" parking, but I am not sure of availability right now.

Thanks! I'll look into that. I assume it's a parking permit like by the SO station? Does anyone have any idea what time it usually fills up by?

Mountain Station lot is never full. There are always spaces. But, I heard a number of people took my advice earlier this year and bought permits for when more Midtown Direct trains stop at Mountain Station. |

There are two lots at Mountain Station, both operated by the SOPA. The lot on the west side of the tracks is permit only. I am not sure of the waiting list, but it is significantly shorter than for the SO Station. The lot on the east (Montrose) side of the tracks is a self-serve "daily" lot. The customer places the daily fee in a little lock-box corresponding to the space #. Make sure you put the money in the box for the right space #! |

Quick question. What does the permit funds go toward? Lot upkeep, lighting, security, etc.

offering a slightly contrary view (to JTA), I've found the Mtn Sta daily lot frequently is full, though usually not until around the 8:20AM train. After that, though, it's been a toss-up. FYI, this lot is now under SO Parking Authority control, and though they've held to their promise not to raise the rates ($2) thru this year (they only took control roughly last Dec.)..... I can't WAIT to see what the rates will be come turn-of-the-year!!! Also, for Aneighbor the SO jitney service is wonderful, consistent, reliable and a good price. |

I don't know about that JL. I drive by the lot several times a day and I always see open spots on the Meeker Street side. |

Thanks everyone for your help. I'm hoping to be taking a 7:25 train from Mountain Station so it sounds like that can work. |

JL and JTA are talking about different lots. The Meeker Street lot may have spaces available throughout the day, but it is permit only. The daily lot is usually full by the 8:20 train. |

well, "technically"..... not 'unique', different lots, DRJ. 'Cause each 'side' serves only Mtn Station, no? and yes, the permit lot (accessed via Meeker St.) does always have spaces, seemingly. BUT... those permits are ALL taken & have been for many years. AND their control, again, rests with SO Parking now..... so.... where does that leave one? So again, aneighbor, get there by 7:25 or take the jitney. |

In my experience, the Midtown Direct has many fewer stops at Mountain Station than at either South Orange or Maplewood stations. I am also interested in when the trains are scheduled to make more stops at Mountain. |

Midtown Direct doesn't stop in Mountain Station, all Mountain Station trains terminate in Hoboken. See for yourself http://www.njtransit.com/sf_tr_schedules.jsp?action=entry&resptype=U&MinB=0&MinA =0&Fare=Y&Line=&LineDesc=&LineLookup=&LineExt=&LineExt2=&STime=12%3A00+PM&RTime= 1%3A00+PM&Oloc=Mountain+Station&OSID=97++++++&Dloc=New+York+Penn+Station&DSID=10 5+++++&back=sf_tr_schedules.shtml&ori=97++++++%3AMountain+Station&des=105+++++%3 ANew+York+Penn+Station&DOW=W&mm=9&dd=7&yyyy=2006&date=9%2F7%2F2006 You have to transfer in Newark to get to Midtown from Mountain Station. |

On weekdays the 4:09 pm and 4:43 pm trains from NY Penn stop at Mountain station. This coincides with no direct service from Hoboken to Mountain station between 3:45 and 5 pm. I thought there used to be very early morning Midtown Direct Train that stopped at Mountain Station, but I can't find it on the schedule. I've not heard of any plans add Midtown direct stops at Mountain Station. |

NJ transit claims they will not be adding mountain station untill all the work is completed at Newark. Something to do with the number of express trains and the limited number of tracks. At that point they said they will revisit the situation (same issue for adding more trains for Orange station and for some other stops on the line). As we do every year, we have once again invited NJ Transit to come to a BOT meeting to respond to questions. They have not indicated when they can attend but it will be on the meeting agenda when they do let us know.
