What is the deal with that huge white SUV that from what I understand is not only a town vehicle but the fire chief's truck? I understand that a cop needs an unmarked car but why in the world does a fireman need one? THAT guy drives thru town like a bank robber on his way home and you don't know who the heck he was. Why no fire department stickers?

It's a new tactic- why fight a fire when you can sneak up on it and catch it by surprise.

Are you sure it's really a Fire Truck- it's usually parked at Baird Community Center, so maybe its for cultural events.

the fire chief drives a white ford expedition with no markings on it. the emergency warning lights on the vehicle are also concealed and not really visible unless activated.

Why? No Fire Chief needs an unmarked car. Is he moonlighting when there are no fires? Is the car his or the F.D.'s?

Maybe they were trying to be Cost Effective...As I recall from my days of bluelighting, It is actually a very expensive industry Emergency Vehicle customization...This includes the markings, which in my opinion gives the towns emergency services their own identity, however adds anywhere from a few hundred to more then a thousand dollars depending on how intricate the markings are. Between the lights, sirens, equipment, electronics your talking another 4-10 grand on top of the cost...I guess you try to save where you can.

And it doubles as a Good Humor Truck during the Spring and Summer months.

i really think that the vehicle should be mark for a few reasons. First it clearly indicates the vehicle belongs to the village and greatly decreseas the possiblility that the vehicle would be used for personal business (i am by the way NOT implying that currently goes on).

second when people see a vehicle that is unmarked with lights and sirens tearing through an intersection it raises questions as to not only what is going on, who was that and is that just some guy who bought a siren.

in addition though everyone in south orange as far as emergency staff from SOPD, SOFD, and SORS may recognize the vehicle as belonging to the fire chief other responders from different towns may not causing further confusion.

south ornage like most other towns from what i have seen should have a marked fire chief's vehicle.

I don't think it really matters...the fire chief is a department head and an administrator...how appropriate is his response to be?

If it meant that our Emergency Services were better staffed at the expense of some adhesive reflective markings...I wouldn't care if they all drove plain vehicles with no markings as long as they have the red flashing lights and have wear a uniform...Im satisfied.

Our police director drives an unmarked vehicle too.
My Only question is why do I always see the fire chief's expedition parked on Cottage Street??

Maybe the Chief ought to just mark it like other fire trucks and avoid the speculation.
