Just a short note to give you a heads up about an upcoming event, and to ask for some help along the way.

An event has been growing in town over the last 3 years, and you may have noticed it for the first time last year when folks in many areas of South Orange began to participate. It is the annual Luminary event that takes place on New Year’s Eve, known this year as South Orange Illumination 2004. It began in the Flood’s Hill area and has now spread to most neighborhoods in the area. It involves residents setting up luminaries (candles set in paper bags) outside their homes. It is a community spirit thing and it is pretty special to see your whole neighborhood all lit up as we go into the New Year.

It is a fund raiser for South Orange Productions (a nonprofit, volunteer organization that is documenting the history and culture of SO). You may have read about it in the November Gaslight.

I’ve agreed to help coordinate this project for my area (Village Colonials Neighborhood Association, in and around Underhill field) as well as for the Tuxedo Park area. Basically, our intent is to deliver a flyer with details about how to order the luminaries to all of our neighbors, with someone, hopefully, on every street delivering the order form, and eventually, the orders of luminaries ($2 gets you everything you need for each luminary).

So, the help I need now…since I don’t live in the Tuxedo Park area, I need folks willing to act as block captains to help me do some of the delivery and collection (flyers now, orders after December 18).

Even if you can’t help as a block captain, be on the look out for the flyer and see if we can light up our areas.

If you are willing to act as a block captain, e-mail me at rudy.lynn@verizon.net
