One of my fellow train commuters told me this morning that he was mugged at GUNPOINT on Ridgewood while walking home last evening (after work, not late at night). A man came up behind him (the commuter had headphones on), swung him around, pointed a handgun at him and said, "Give me your money." A car passed on the street, and the commuter waved at it, and this was enough to cause the gunman to take off. The commuter called the police on his cell, and they took a report. The police said there is an increase in this sort of crime around this time of year (what, criminals need $$ for holiday shopping?) I don't have any more details; just wanted to offer this as a head's-up to anyone else walking home from the train in that direction.

This is good to know. Monday night at 5:45 I walked home from the train with head phones on. The streets were so dark (I HATE the gas lights) and I felt so unsafe, I took my head phones off and vowed never to walk home in the dark again - even at 5:30p |

A few Wednesdays back there was an armed robbery at around 11:00 AM at Hillside PL and Mountain House RD. I never saw coverage of it in the Star-Ledger. Perhaps it was in the New-Record. |

Hmmmm. Many questions here. Should I call the P.D. - do they give the kind of info we are looking for over the phone? |

LIFER- I would not feel any safer if I knew that the good citizens amongst us were "packing heat". This is not Wild West City. PS: The King of England has not sent an occupying force to the colonies in almost 200 years. |

I'm sorry to hear this kind of thing is going on, but on the other hand, it is generally not a good idea to wear headphones while walking at night. Headphones limit both your hearing and awareness and it is vital that you are always alert to your surroundings and to any potential problems. I wear headphones the entire train ride to/from NYC, but I take them off when I walk home. |

From News Record: A South Orange man was held at gunpoint by a robber Dec. 1 at Ridgewood Road and Kingsland Terrace. Police said the victim was walking home from the train station when he was confronted by the armed robber. The victim waved at oncoming traffic and pushed the robber away from him. The robber then fled east on Ridgewood Road. Police described the suspect as a black male in his 20s with a thin build and a moustache.

I thought Ridgewood Rd Ran North to South. Does that mean he went into the back yards and vanished |

YIKES!!! I live on Kingsland Terrace and walk home from the SO train all the time. That's the LAST place I'd expect to get held up at gunpoint. Holy cow. On the other hand, if I tell my wife this, perhaps I'll get a ride home from the train every night----on the third hand, if I tell my wife this, we may be putting our house on the market next month.
