Agreed -- and with NO justification. I mean -- this is worse than the real estate tax increase! This deserves some comment! Pete |

Me too! $15 a month increase amounts to 27% on the current $55 - which is already highway robbery!! With the waiting list for the lot, it's probably just a simple matter of supply and demand, but I'd really like to know what their reasoning is. And what about the resident commuter lots? Are those going up as well? And how about giving us something in return for this godawful increase - like some security for the lot? Having had a car stolen there 2 months ago, this is like salt into the proverbial wound.

you could always not park in the south orange lots and either walk if you are an area resident or find a ride to the station. |

can you say "hidden tax increase" ?? Because this is a quasi government but not really agency -- I bet NO ONE will take any responsibility or offer any reason for this. Very annoying. /p |

Quit complaining people!!! If you break it down it comes to something like $3.50 A DAY!!! Which comes to maybe 25 - 35 cents an hour for an 8 hour work day plus commute time. |

Who issued the rate letter? If you look at the SO Web site under Parking Authority there is no mention of any change to the rates. |

Probably NJ Transit, since they own the lot... |

Yes, let's not blame the town for things it doesn't control. The SO parking authority controls the other lots, which are resident lots. NJ Transit controls the lot that it built, which is not for residents only (since a state agency built it), and which has higher rates. |

Could the town have taken over the Sickley property and built a lot for South Orange commuters instead of having Transit buy it and make it a lot for non residents? |

When the Midtown Direct first went in, NJTransit made it clear that they had not put in the connector only to serve the towns directly on the line. They wanted to build non-resident lots like ours in many of the towns along the way, but most towns other than South Orange stonewalled them. For a while, NJT threatened to use eminent domain to grab land for lots in other towns, but backed off, leaving us one of the only towns with parking for out of towners. Personally, much as I dislike eminent domain, I wish NJT had forced other towns to take their share of non-resident parking. |

Increase is nearly 30% - ridiculous - I have been on the SO commuter lot waiting list for over 3 years. Anybody who says its not much of an increase when broken down could not be a SO resident. As this is a fee over exhorbitant tax increases. We can not talk about "only" increases with regard to any fees or taxes, as these marginal increases are over extremely high bases. Letter was very disappointing. |

Again, has nothing to do with South Orange or any city tax increases. Compare it to your state tax, since it is a state fee. Dislike it as much as you want, but don't blame this one on the town. |

Did not get the answer to my question (who issued the rate letter?)... maybe Jeff Alexander can provide some guidance. |

I received it from the South Orange Parking Authority... But, as Susan points out, they DO NOT set the rates.. the rates are set by New Jersey Transit, so anger should be directed at NJ Transit, not the town (for once)... Typical NJT nonsense |

So -- to be clear -- 1) who/what is the right person and "authority" to ask for an explanation? (is this really the SO Parking authority just acting as an agent for NJT? -- seems to me the letter should have stated that, if so) 2) and if that's the case -- who, where, and how can I complain to NJT? thx Pete |

Yes, the Parking authority just acts as an agent for NJ Transit - so don't yell at them I have found that the best way to get an answer from NJ Transit is to write a scathing letter and get it published in the Star Ledger All it is is a thinly disguised fare hike |
