I've stayed out of this topic mostly because I thought it was a "fringe" topic here on the board. Frankly, I'm shocked to see this line of discussion still has so much traction.

You change your name when there are very serious image problems. For example-- Phillip Morris no longer exists-- it is now Altria (I think).

South Orange, while no one who is sane will tell you that there are no issues, certainly is not in dire need of a PR makeover. Just because things could be better does not mean you dump hundreds of years of history.

If we want a name change, let's honor the first settlers of this land, and name ourselves
"THE LENAPE VILLAGE".
We owe this to those whose land we usurped.

I fear changing the name would detract from the focus on the real issues of our town: Like if we somehow changed the name of the town, everything would be better. I don't see it.

South Orange is a fine name. It's the town itself that needs work.

The Lenape Village...? not to be confused with Lenape Valley which already exists. Guess that doesn't help!

On K-Pax we refer to most of North Jersey as Lodi. We have not updated our maps in quite some time.

I'm always surprised to hear people saying that South Orange is declining. It is much nicer than when I moved to Maplewood in 1993, in my opinion. All the stores below the train tracks (e.g., Cait & Abby's) were vacant/boarded up. The streets in that area were in bad shape and there weren't nearly as many good places to eat as there are now. Progress has been slow, but it has been happening. I really like South Orange, and think you should be proud of it. (BTW, when house hunting, we looked in both }}SO and Maplewood, we just happened to settle on a Maplewood house we liked best.)

Any K-Paxian would love our fruity name.

And you do realize Kevin Spacey was born in South Orange, I hope.

Coming in on this late, but I remember the last time this was discussed (before this forum I think... or at least I didn't have the internet) they wanted to change the name to "South Mountain".

At that time someone came up with a hilarious satirical editorial for the local paper about re-naming everything in the town.

If anyone has access to that editorial (i.e, the writer), maybe this is the place to re-post it. As I recall it pretty much shut down any further griping about name changes.

I've been living here for 40 years. I remember the push to change the name to South Mountain. I vaguely remember the article in the News -Record....There have been many changes in South Orange Village downtown... some good ...some not so good.... one thing.... no one will think kindly of having to approach So. Orange Ave at rush hour....but, that's the only way to get to Reservoir or Antonelli's or.... lot's of other good restaurants. If there'something that needs fixing, it's not the name.

A few years ago, there was a movement in the town of Fishkill, NY to change the name to Fish Save, because they didn't like promoting the image of killing. (As Dave Barry would say, I'm not making this up.) When the objectors pointed out that "kill" is merely the Dutch word for "river", the proposers said sure, they knew that, but not everyone will.

It's good that the movement lost, but it's pretty amazing that a large number of people thought it was a good idea.

A town's reputation is only as good as the town itself. If you don't like the direction the town is taking, work to improve the town. Changing its name may prove to be a short term fix (and may not even accomplish that) but it won't help matters for long.

Tom -- you're referring to a wonderful letter to the editor written by Tom Carlson. Tom posts here occasionally and will perhaps see your request for a reprise of his letter.

A town I grew up near in Westchester changed their name from North Tarrytown to Sleepy Hollow (from Washington Irving's description.) At first I thought the name change was ridiculous, but now I kind of like the new name.

You people are very fiscally short sighted. We could be Staples, NJ or Continental Airlines, NJ.

If South Orange were to change its name to Abbott, NJ and the school district were to change it's name to the Maplewood Abbott School District, would we then be eligible for Abbott school district level funding from the State?

In addition, perhaps we can rename Maplewood to Costello. Officially, it'll be known as the Abbott and Costello school district. Fitting for all the national media coverage bestowed these past couple of weeks.

Rename the whole town Montrose if you are worried about being a rotten orange... but don't you think the rotten oranges are more concerned? Kinda like when you drive into Newark and they want you to think you've just entered "Vailsburg"

John
