We heard our gym, South Mountain Fitness, is closing. Anyone else hear anything about that? If so, what's going in to take its place?

Why, and why have we not been offered a refund for our six month membership?

Since it's just a rumor, why not call them? Maybe they can tell you if they're actually closing, and if so, why you haven't been offered a refund.

Duh, you're right, I should have just called to begin with rather than use precious MOL bandwidth. I just called and they are indeed closing 12/31. She said members will be getting letters, presumably offering a refund for unused time. She didn't know anything about what's going in there.

Damn! Every time I start seeing improvements in my strength training, something stops my progress! (My broken wrist hasn't helped matters either!)

We shouldn't be surprised this gym is closing. Our membership fee was only $35/month, a real bargain in an area where there's so much wealth. Maybe someone will come along and re-open the facility under new management. It always seemed to be busy in there, and the aerobics always seemed to be very popular among the ladies.

Also, it wasn't a very well-run business. For months at a time I skated by without renewing my membership--essentially working out for free--because the people behind the counter never noticed that it had expired. Dishonest of me, sure, but I never felt like it was my responsibility to point it out to them.

I do think that we could stand to have a bit of a higher-end gym in our area.

Hopefully, not another nail salon!

That would be a big nail salon!

Daveclark, you might try Motion Fitness over in Millburn (near town line with Maplewood). Well-run, well-managed, higher-end.

You can walk to Motion from the Millburn train station quite easily. And daveclark did say he wanted "higher end," which usually connotes "higher priced."
