.. That's Village Aglow.. some of our neighborhoods looked lovely tonight.. but as we drove around town there were quite a few "dark" homes. It's a simple thing ... so did you or didn't you and if not, why not?

I did, I did and it was lovely. The village looked beautiful especially around Flood Hill and the Duck Pond. It's really simple to participate and not expensive.
Thanks to all the volunteers who helped distribute the supplies, set them up on public spaces and organize the whole activity.

It was wonderful.

Unfortunately, I don't think flyers for the event were distributed in every neighborhood. We didn't get any--I just knew to go get the luminaria at Baird. On Fairview, we were the only house that had them--in past years, many more homes participated.

We were out of town, so we didn't even consider it. Same is true most years.

Susan - Your block captain will be happy to light your house next year. Claire, our "super captain" really went the extra mile this year and her hard work showed & glowed.

I agree the glow was beautiful. But as I drove through town earlier today (about 4pm) I noticed many houses still had the bags out. As of a 1/2 hour or so ago some of the houses on my street STILL have he bags out. It's going to rain tonight! I hope they pick up the bags before then...

SoOrLady:
Actually Village Aglow is in mid Dec. sponsors by the Rec Department. They put tan luminaries aroung the Duck Pond.

On New Years Eve this was South Orange Illumination-2004. Sponsored by South Orange Productions.

We were not home this year, but we heard it was Spectacular! We bought 15 and our neighbor was kind enough to light them, thanks MB.

- heard about it on this message board
- forgot to order it ahead of time
- found it very difficult to get to Baird Center during working hours
- on new year's eve asked the folks putting them up at the church on SO AVe. and Ridgewood and they told us that they had run out...

There has to be an easy way of ordering these... for a couple that works long hours...

Maybe next year...

Dear Hillsider:

We did our best . . . over 1800 flyers were distributed to homeowners throughout the town, Southorange.org had a dedicated site, info/phone numbers in the Gaslight, News Record and our very own MOL(Posted on Wednesday, December 15, 2004 - 8:19 pm:-). Lots of opportunities!

The best way to get luminaries is to volunteer as a Block Captain! Feel free to private line me and I will add you to the list for next year . . .

"don't get me wrong... I think the new year's eve lighting is great... I just think the reachout needs to be better... "

Yes, that is our goal also. This is one of those events that the out-reach gets better and better each year! We have grown from about 30 Block Captains to close to 80 in three years. It says a lot about a community that can come together (in probably the busiest time of the year) and develop a network of that size. In addition, we have approximately 40 more volunteers that fold bags, shovel sand, light candles and organize the entire process. Many thanks to all of you.

Hillsider:
Thanks so much for the private line . . . we are grateful to have you as a Block Captain next year. If anyone else is interested, please feel free to PL me.
