Tony Smith - sculptor of international fame, exhibited around the world and in the N.Y. Museum of Modern Art, born, lived all his life, and worked in South Orange (Stanley Road), attended CHS. His father owned a foundry "A.W.Smith"; you can see his name embossed in many manhole covers around New York and New Jersey. |

At one time in the late 80's... 6 of the members of Kool & the Gang lived in South Orange in the Montrose Section. Kool's wife owned "Just Sox" in Village Plaza near the newspaper store. It lasted about one year, which I'm sure she thought "Just Sux." O.J. Anderson used to live in Newstead across the street from Willis Reed. |

It is also my belief that Damon Wayans has (had) a house in Newstead. Ian Ziering, of 90201 fame, was from West Orange. At least one member of the rap group "Naughty By Nature" went to Columbia-- and I believe one of the group now lives in town. |

Actually TS Monk, Thelonius Monk Jr. was his father. James Lee and Claudio Roditi add to our fine jazz roster. |

I am flattered to be mentioned with all the B-celebrities that once or still grace their presence in S.O. I had the pleasure to see Kool & the Gang in the early eighties, TS Monk recently played @ Cecil's in West O., and Sammy Nougat rocked out @ the Papermill Playhouse in the summer of '95.From a musical perspective, I am honored and giddy with laughter. |

Ed, are you the "Nougat" show at the PMP was in '95? Wasn't in '94 with Frock Monster opening? Great show nonetheless. |

For a long time I heard the rumor that Willis Reed lived in the Village Mews. Yet the few times I asked, no one could remember seeing him. I realize he would be on the road a lot, but sooner or later you'd think someone would notice someone who is 6 foot 10 or thereabouts throwing out his garbage. |

Isn't there a hip hop celebrity in the Montrose section? I can't think of his name but a few years ago his father was tragically killled in the garage when a car rolled into him or was backed into him. I can't think of his name, anyone know who I am talking about? Wycliff something maybe? |

Wyclef Jean (posted in an earlier post), but I don't think he lived in Montrose. He was in the the Fugees with Lauryn Hill who lives in S. Orange. Wyclef Jean still owns a house in S. Orange (newstead ).

Willis Reed lived on Beach Spring for a number of years before he moved to Newstead. He used to walk "the hill" (Overhill) every morning... as did my mom. God Bless her, my mom had no idea who Willis Reed was. All she knew is that they both had knee problems and liked to walk at 6 a.m. every morning. It took a stunned friend who saw them on his way to work to point out who "my new friend Willis" was. |

He was the center for the NY knicks (basketball team) back in the late 60's and early 70's and considered one of the best of all time.

As for Dr. James Lee-- you must now be more accurate: Dr. James Lee Sr. or Dr. James Lee, Jr. |

Don't know about Dennis Haysbert, but we have a friend who lives in the Newstead section who looks uncannily like him. It's scary. Every time I have been drinking when I see him, I like to remind him. He's probably pretty sick of hearing me say it. |
