Just saw a blurb on CBS News a car crashed through a house on Proepect and Third. Anyone know anything? At least it's near the Fire Trailers and Squad. |

Efforts to make prospect a safer street have failed, in some part due to the reluctance of the BOT to make any traffic calming changes. |

CBS had a chopper there. They said two different things. !. A car went THROUGH a house and 2. A car HIT a house. They have different meanings to me. The news report did mention the porch being destroyed. Nothing about if anyone was hurt. I hope nobody got hurt. mjc- Well since we don't have a firehouse and our poor firefighters are forced to live in those trailers... dmg- Is Prospect considered a County Road? That might have something to do with the BOT. I agree it's a bad road. And it's only going to get worse around those intersections. |

the car hit the wrap around porch and knocked down about 1/3 of it. the house has no structural damage with the foundation intact per the village building department. the driver of the vehicle was traveling north on prospect, she was transported the a local hospital with only minor injuries.

Just wanted to say, our SO firefighters responded quickly. I saw them while getting off the train. I drove by the scene because ths is on my route home and the police had part of Prospect blocked off. I happened to see a police car on the grounds of the house. I figured it was probably an accident, especially when I saw the ambulances. I knew I would find out the real deal on SO Specific!

Prospect is a SO Street evidenced by Village leaf pickup and the Village's painting of double lines painted infront of the house in question on September 12, 2001. |

They also painted additional crosswalks when the Garfield/Tichenor/Prospect intersection was rebuilt. Some of us in the neighborhood during the planning of that project were advocating additional traffic calming steps on Prospect as well, which unfortunately were not taken up. The speed limit on that street is 25 MPH but most seem to think it is 35 and therefore go 40 or 45 regularly. Other communities have implemented such measures as raised crosswalks (which provide a gentle bump to calm traffic) and similar devices, but not here, even when it's really needed. Why can't we?

As a neighbor of the house, there was a terrific bang. The car crossed the lane at an angle and jumped the curb becoming slightly airborne. It then hit the left ront corner and demolished the porch floor and roof. Kudos to fire and Police for the lightning response. And yes, the traffic frequently flies down the road as a quicker drive than Valley! Nothing like an empty container truck or a bus moving along at 50 mph to wake you up. Hello Rosner, Prospect to Rosner... Please get the police out to issue summons. Maybe that will get the attention of the speeders. |

I wish they would give me a siren and a ticketbook. I will ask the police director to see if we can increase enforcement on Prospect street. Unfortunately there are several problem areas in the village and limited resources.

mrosner, limited resources as in not enough police officers? or are you referring to too many problem areas?

I meant not enough revenue to police the many problem areas unless we hired more police and therefore raised taxes. And for those who argue we would get more ticket revenue, that is short term because people would just stop speeding. The police director does try to make sure that every problem street is addressed on a regular basis. This problem is not unique to S. Orange - same issues throughout New Jersey and the Northeast.

But Mr Rosner We want them to stop speeding, even in the short term. As Jon Stewart said "They're hurting us..." |

In the past I had an idea that a group of volunteers could simply drive back and forth up and down Prospect at the posted 25 MPH speed. Grass roots traffic calming, but requires a lot of effort and commitment.

I think that in N.J. citizens are allowed to use radar guns and it's valid in court. Put a couple of signs up "Patrolled by Radar," and form a group to take turns using the radar gun. |

i think a much better and effective idea would be to hire additional police officers and encourage current officers to provide increased visibility in areas of concern such as prospect. simply because they can be utuilzed to not only enforce traffic violations on prospect but also provide a deterrance to speeding simply by being present in the area. i know i always slow down when i notice a police vehicle in the area. mrosner, just a side note any idea when or if the town will be adding any police or fire personel in 2005? |

e roberts, Not that I think it's a bad idea, but that will raise taxes. I know... only a few dollars for each family... At a time when our taxes are approaching stratospheric levels, perhaps other things, such as speed bumps, could reduce speeding, free up police for more important work, and not create long term positions that could never be eliminated. |

e roberts: We have our budget meetings in January. I would guess that we will not be in a position to hire any more employees given how high our taxes are already. Woodstock: Speed bumps are legal in NJ, but there are some other traffic calming devices like speed tables. However, they are expensive to install and they do cause some problems for the DPW in snow storms (as do speed bumps). I happen to like Argon's idea and if everyone did obey the speed limit it would help. My guess is that most of us go over the speed limit more often than we realize.
