There's a nice story in today's News-Record about "Sister Rose's Passion" which has been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Short Subject.

South Orange resident Risa Perlmutter Goldstein is the coordinating producer.

Quoting the News-Record, "The movie is a 40-minute documentary on the life of Sr. Rose Thering, an 83-year old Dominican nun who has dedicated her life to cultivating religious tolerance between Catholics and Jews.

Thering taught education at Seton Hall Univeristy and was program coordinator of its Institute of Judeo-Christian studies.

She also spent much of her life dedicated to fighting anti-semitism, which led her to take an active part in Vatican II ad to denounce Church doctrine that blamed the Jews for Jesus' death."

I've certainly heard of Sr. Rose and I know she has many fans in South Orange. She's truly a remarkable person. And perhaps South Orange is a better place because of her.

She's a sweet little lady with a heart of gold!

Congrats to Risa for this recognition and awareness.

I'm wondering, why has this amazing story about local women - Catholic and Jew - and an actual academy award nomination - generated so little comment?
Now if it was about Frosty the Snowman or Michael Moore.........

mtierney, I'm not sure why people haven't commented on this. I find it very interesting and have been looking for a contact person related to this film. I'm interested in having a screening and discussion at the library.......we've had good response to this type of presentaton previously. I'm also open to other documentaries followed by discussion. Are there any volunteers? Please contact me if you have suggestions of other films/discussion topics. R

Liz Smith's column today mentions Sister Rose's nomination - with the news that the documentary may be made into a feature film starring Shirley Maclaine (sp?)!

A South Orange nun, now 84, who spent her entire life working on Jewish and Christian relations.

Will Seton Hall offer a screening of the film - whether it wins the AA or not?

BTW, where's the local interest in this outstanding accomplishment?
