I just missed a NJT train at Hoboken the other day. My train was no longer listed on the board. But when I checked the clock at Hoboken Terminal, I was a minute early. The explanation from Customer Service is that they stop listing a train on the board and they stop accepting new passengers twenty seconds before the departure time. They refused to consider the possibility that either the clock is wrong, or that the train left early. Spekaing of NJT clocks, the clock at the SO train station is rarely right. The ticketmaster says he does not have the authority to change it.

What they need are atomic clocks!!! Yah know the ones that receive the radio signals from Colorado. Mrs. K, showing a punctual side I never knew she had, now has purchased two. Simply set your watch to the clock and you will know exactly, to the second, what time it is. Then you can argue with authority at the train station!!

I have a Casio Wave Ceptor watch. I got it at Target for $35. I just did a web search, and I don't see that model. The new Wave Ceptors are more expensive, but they're also more handsome than the model I have. It is gratifying to check it against a reliable time source and see that it is dead on. But it is not possible to set it ahead to make myself early! |

Jerry: I have had that problem at Hoboken many times, especially with a very tight connection from PATH. Even though the train was no longer listed on the board, it is entirely possible the train remained in the station until departure time. Since most trains have regular track assignments, it helps to know in advance what track a train will be departing from. Another option is to follow the people who are running all out to make (one would hope) the same rain you are. Downside is if you guess wrong you could end up in another part of the State. I console myself with the realization that NJT is doing this for the safety of its passengers. |
