The link below is a survey which a graduate student hopes will aid in the collection of information about the relationship of Seton Hall University and South Orange to be used in their masters thesis.

Check it out....

I like when someone posts what I've been thinking, but I don't know how to do it without it sounding like a personal attack.

One can't be suspended for what one's thinking? What's this country coming to?

-s.

BTW: Can one be suspended for NOT thinking?

I guess it's good that I deleted what I was about to post in response or I wouldn't be posting this.

Bart:

You might advise the graduate student taking this survey that a "No" response to the first question should not automatically send the participant to item 16 (thank you for participating), without giving them the opportunity to have any input.

There are residents of neighboring communities (especially Maplewood, Newark, and Orange all of which have borders within a few blocks of Seton Hall), employees of South Orange businesses, and frequent visitors to the area who could provide valuable input.

Storing responses from non-South Orange residents/business owners separately would permit separation of this data from that of persons from surrounding towns and could provide valuable supplementary information.

If the graduate student does not want to do this, then providing an instruction limiting the survey to South Orange residents/business owners on the first page of the survey would be advisable.

Joan,

Thank you for your comment and yes you are correct that the student has limited the survey to South Orange residents/business owners. I will give your message to the student.

Ditto what Joan said. I was disappointed to have that happen to me also.

also, perhaps the questions might be rephrased to be grammatically correct. it's discouraging that something so poorly written and constructed is a university-level project.

This is what happens when an amateur puts together a "survey".

Total piece of junk -- the results will be more misleading than helpful by far.

Ever notice you can't ask someone "tell me what you don't know?"

That said -- this is so poor -- maybe its not even legitimate?

I'm passing on this until someone comes out with a good reason why the student couldn't post here for himself/herself.

pete g -

You're right that a lot of skill goes into constructing a good survey (my husband does this stuff too).

Since this is a student ("amateur") effort, maybe some suggestions for improvement would be appreciated? It's possible that the thesis supervisor isn't that sophisticated about survey/statistical matters either.

I took the survey, but for a graduate effort, it is pretty pedestrian. (The original poster said it was graduate level work.) Graduate courses generally require participation in research classes (at least mine did -- both graduate and undergrad). I would be interested to see what program this survey is for. Unfortunately, shoddy research is often used to make decisions and sometimes it's difficult to determine what makes for good research. There's also the possibility that the researcher has a particular bias that comes out in the research. It's all very complicated and interesting.

mjc --

I'd be delighted to help. These online tools (surveymonkey, surveyconsole, zoomerang, etc etc) are *very* inviting because of their ease of use and low cost to adminster a survey.

If the survey owner would be interested to talk about it -- please PL me.
