This evening, when I returned to my car in the Shoprite parking lot, I had a notice on the windshield. Apparently, starting Monday, you will need a permit to park there. Amazing. First, thanks for the notice. One full business day. Wonderful. I appreciate so much notice, folks. Second, what kind of permit? Last time I checked with SOPA, there were less than 30 people in front of me for a permit. Given that there are more than 30 spots in the lot, I assume I should be getting a call from SOPA telling me I now have a spot. Anyone know when I should expect that call? |

Marion, Do you have any idea what you're talking about? It's not free. It's $5 a day. Yes, it's all day. It's also the most expensive parking in town, but all that's usually available if you take a train later than 7am. |

Will these be monthly permits? It was my vague recollection from more than a year ago that the parking authority would be charging $5.00/day for parking in the lot instead of making it a commuter lot because construction was going to start soon (spring of 2004) and they didn't want to issue permits for this reason. If they are considering permits now, I guess that means that there will be no construction in the ShopRite lot for a long time.

Spoke to SOPA. Basically it was a miscommunication. They are simply going to enforce requiring having the ticket from the parking guy. He was gone by thetime I got there that morning, so I didn't have a ticket. My apologies to anyone I may have misled. |

I'm surprised this town doesn't charge you to park in your own driveway. They have to raise more money to pay the trustees. |

marion, I know parking is terrible. That has absoutely nothing to do with what I was talking about. And from your comments, it was pretty obvious you didn't know what you were talking about, since you implied that parking was free in that lot. Either way, it's a moot point. As I said, the notice was misworded, and all it meant was that they are going to more strictly enforce the $5 payment to park all day. |

Just wondering if Madden 11 is a reference to John Madden of the NJ Devils. If so you should go to the sports section of MOL. I'd like to know more opinions on the NHL cancellation. |

THE BIGGEST ISSUE WITH PARKING IS THE PROLIFERATION OF ILLEGAL PARKING...I HATE WHEN I SEE THE POLICE OR PARKING AUTHORITY DRIVE RIGHT BY A CAR ILLEGALLY PARKED AFTER I PARKED LEGALLY SOMEWHERE AND WALKED ENTIRELY TOO FAR TO GET A COFFEE OR VIDEO DOWNTOWN...AND DON'T GET ME STARTED ON THE DOUBLE PARKERS IN THE TRANSIT LOT DURING BUNNIE'S HAPPY HOUR, I LOVE FREE PIZZA AND $1 DRAFTS LIKE EVERYONE, BUT CAN'T YOU JUST FIND A PARKING SPOT SO THE REST OF US PICKING UP WHERE WE ARE DIRECTED TO DON'T HAVE TO FIGHT OUR WAY OUT OF THAT LOT...MY RANT IS DONE..back to lower cases. |

First of all-- the Yaphett Kotto/Midnight Run reference with Agent Alonso Mosely is my favorite of all time. Second-- the slipping in of user name "Jack_Walsh"-- Dinero's character from the movie-- is well done. Second of all-- have there been any updates on plans for a parking deck somewhere near the train station? |

Josh In response to a parking deck being built near the train station. It's a go and construction will begin soon. Ooops. That's in Bloomfield, not South Orange! |

I have a question for anyone out there who can answer it. Can SO residents park on the street in front of their houses? If so do we have to pay to park there? |

Call Neva at S.O. Parking (973-378-7715 x2037) and see what she says. No overnight parking on the street, but otherwise I believe on-street parking is allowed except where there are signs restricting it. I don't know what happens if parking in front of your house is restricted (2 hours, no parking, whatever). There are overnight parking permits for residents who have no onsite parking, but I don't know whether those permits are for street parking or lot parking, and I don't know whether there's a daytime street parking permit for residents.

Shoprite lot is $5 daily as previously posted. I am not aware of how long parking will be allowed in that lot. It could be weeks, months, maybe longer. It does give commuters for the time being an option. The overnight parking permits are for the SO municipal lots. There has been no parking deck discussion at the SOPA in many, many months. Numerous sites have been discussed in the past, but there has been no action on any of this. To ease the commuter parking situation in the Village, additional Jitneys are needed. This is currently under discussion and review. There is currently 1 route operating in Tuxedo Park and parts of Montrose. I expect a surrvey to be distributed soon, this would gauge demand and the areas that would be best served by additional jitneys. FYI there are over 600 names each on both the NJT and SOPA parking permit waiting lists. The names at the top of the list registered in April 2002. Number 300 on the SOPA list registered Feb 2003. My guess, 4+ year wait for a SOPA permit. I hope this information helps. I periodically check postings and try to clarify parking issues. The South Orange Parking Authority meetings are held monthly at village hall. These meetings are open to the public. I encourage all who have questions or issues to please attend and address the board. Sincerely, Jeff DuBowy - Commissioner SOPA |

I've occasionally parked overnight in front of my house - never gotten a ticket. When we lived in MPLWD, I would make the same mistake, but got ticketed every time. Since I've never seen a "no on street parking..." type sign in SO, I assumed it was OK. I park for free by the duck pond, and walk to the train station from there. |

Analog, I wouldn't assume you will always get free parking by the duck pond, there are hourly restrictions for the street, and the lot is Board of Ed property, you might find your car towed because it is private property, if the Principal feels like taking back the space. You might get that $50 parking assessment in a ticket. I enjoy reading by the park and once in a while I see the police and Parking authority in the area, but not too often. |

We were the recipients of four tickets for overnight parking the first two nights we lived in SO (two cars, two nights). When we tried to appeal we were told "too bad, that's the rule". Even though there are no signs posted anywhere near where we live informing us of this regulation. Not being from around here, we had no idea that it would be considered a crime to park in front of one's own house. Since then, I have been given various forms of grief when I have called in guest's cars for overnight parking. All in all, I wish the village would devote more time to trying to get the downtown looking less like Baghdad and less time to enforcing pissy little parking rules. |

Jeff, On your mention above of registration dates for the waiting lists: My name was added to the SOPA list in Nov. 2001. Does April 2002 refer to the NJT list only? Once I cleared the NJT list, I stopped checking the SOPA list regularly, but it sounds like I should have cleared it by now. |

According to my last wait list - if you were added in Nov 2001 - you should have received notice for a permit. Please call Neva at SOPA immediately to find out your status. 973-762-6000 ext 2036. |

Jeff, it seems SHU students and new apartment renters gain on street permits easy...I see numerous new tenants with stickers, but why are so many still on a waiting list? |

Commuter lot parking and resident street/lot parking are two very different things. The commuter wait is the long one (and has gotten much longer since we moved here -- it only took us 12 or 18 months). |
