New Voting Machines

Author Message   Dan Kaslow Citizen Username: Dank3265 Post Number: 14 Registered: 11-2004 Posted on Friday, February 25, 2005 - 2:22 pm:        Grassroots Action Supporting Progress [GRASP] -- the recently formed local political organization -- has learned, based on a conversation with Essex County Superintendent of Elections, Carmine C. Casciano, that he has selected the Sequoia AVC Advantage electronic voting machines for installation for the 2006 election in all county towns that do not currently have electronic voting machines. This equipment decision, made under the mandate of the Help America to Vote Act (HAVA), will have some financial implications for the towns, since the state is only currently picking up about 75% of the cost, funds which the state, in turn, receives from Washington. Based on our group's electoral reform/voting standards committeed research, the Sequoia machine is currently used by nine of fourteen counties that have electronic voting. Since there is no current federal or state legislation requiring that these machines be installed with a paper trail mechanism, they will not have one (although they do have the capability). Since there is a strong likelihood that the State will pass legislation requiring a paper trail, the county contract with Sequoia is written to provide for such a configuration. According to our additional research, currently approximately 30% of all registered voters nationwide can use electronic voting machines. Roughly 15% of those voters use the AVC Advantage machine, which is the second most popular machine in use.
