usually when a new development is constructed, most towns have an official turning over of the street and its maintenence to the town...Most towns have been successful in suits to collect for the cost of maintaining the upkeep of roads from contractors if they fail to provide the services to the residents.

MHD,

Do you know if the "privateness" of the road was for during construction, or ad infinitum? I ask because Jessica Way was a private road until the final topcoat was put on by the builder. Then the town took it over. I don't know what the case was with the Pulte homes, but I wonder... If the town is not providing the homeowners in that development with the same services they are the rest of the town, are they due a tax refund? They are paying for the service just as the rest of us are. Shouldn't they receive what they pay for?

Woodstock,

Initially, the road was to be private in order to meet the parking requirements of the Consent Decreee, so overnight parking would be permitted on the street.

My understanding was that the street was to remain private indefinitely.

Why should the Village provide service to a PRIVATE ROAD, while not being able to enforce the same parking (& other) restrictions (prohibition against overnight parking) imposed upon every other resident?

Perhaps any street in town that has houses with parking issues should declare themselves "Private". It's silly.

Private means Private. Why should we support maintenance of a private entity?

Mark - can you confirm if Pulte is paying for service of the Private Road, or if perhaps the Village is not servicing the road?

MHD,

Why not camp out at the intersection of Harding and Tillou during the next snow storm and see if Mr. Gross is drving the plow that clears the new Pulte streets?

The road is private and we are not servicing the road.
As I stated at a meeting a long time ago when this issue first arose, my guess is when the development is finished the new residents will request that the road be made public and for the town to plow. My guess is the BOT (whomever is on it) will agree to plow even if the road remains private.

MHD, so can you confirm that you are in favor of a tax reduction for the owners of thoses houses so that they are not paying for services that they are not receiving?

Woodstock - Good luck with your move.

Parrot Head - So I tried to leave the front 2-3 feet of the apron full of snow so not to have to shovel too much more but by the time I had to go out the plow had not been by. So I shoveled all the snow off and just as I was leaving, the plow came. Just my luck. It's a good tip if you don't have to go out too early.

And you guys do great work. SO seems to have the best plowed roads of any town I've ever seen. Keep up the good work.

woodstock, arguably, their taxes pay for plowing of the public roads they drive on, same as the rest of us. Only, their "driveway" (which maybe they pay a private contractor to plow, via their monthly association fee or whatever) is a lot longer than most of ours. Make sense at all?

Best wishes on your closing and move!

(full disclosure: I have no idea whether the Pulte "roads" in question are private property or not, or who is plowing them.)

In my original thread, I wrote; ...that only prompted me to drive faster on my next pass and fling snow onto her front porch.....
I would like the residents of South Orange to know that this is not common practice among S.O. plow-truck drivers. No Village employee would deliberately "fling" snow onto someone's property out of spite. Like many of my posts, this one was written as a sarcastic rant mixed with, what I thought was humor. I would also like to remind everyone that I am a DPW employee, not a DPW representative. I speak only for myself. Please don't hold the rest of South Orange DPW accountable for what I post on this message board.
All appologies to those who misconstrued my post as standard DPW procedure. I figured People would have a sense of humor. To those who appreciate the work of me and my fellow employees (I wont speak for them however) Thank You All. PARROTHEAD

HELL NO!! The private road should NOT be plowed!!! I don't think the town plows the road that goes to Orange Lawn or Brookside. Do they?

Taylor - Mark answered that in his post above. Right now the Village is not plowing the road, while it is still private. At least we know what the present situation is.

Mark
If the town plows that road then the no overnight parking law should be enforced on that road.

I applaud the SO snow crews for their work yesterday. By 9 am my street was wet but clear. Compare that to Valley, where despite a phalanx of four contractor plows working together(construction dump trucks with plows on them -- at 9 am!), there was still 2 inches of snow, ice or slush on the road.

Aren't Valley and SO Ave the responsibility of Essex County?

Wyoming Ave, Scotland Road, Valley Street and S. Orange Ave are all county roads and it is their responsibility.

It was amazing how clear South Orange Ave was from South Orange through the reservation yesterday. As soon as you hit the border of Livingston, there was a hard packed snow the entire length into Florham Park.

At first I thought it was because of the water supply area and maybe no salt was used, but the road was lousy way past Livingston Mall.

Any ideas why?

I assumed everyone knew that Valley is County road vs. a Village Road
