On the front page of today's Star-Ledger is a story reporting that for the first time in its 108-year history, the New Jersey Audubon Society is taking a stand on hunting and will ask the state to reduce the population of white-tailed deer. The Audubon Society report concluded that deer management methods such as fencing and birth control have very limited impact, and that the state's entire ecology is at stake. Other enviromental groups have also begun to take aim at deer. "It is our obligation to do something about it, to deal with the deer. White-tailed deer are a threat to our conservation areas," said Mike Van Clef, director of science and stewardship for the Nature Conservancy in New Jersey. http://www.nj.com/news/ledger/index.ssf?/base/news-20/1110780678211590.xml |

This can mean only one thing: Harpo is busily preparing a massive auto da fe for anti-deer environmentalist heretics. Then again, lacking the requisite allies, she may just set herself alight in front of a large placard of Bambi. |

Mark: Is this a State, County or Municipal issue? I tend to agree with the Audobon Society. Question is how a "hunt" could be safely implemented in the Reservation. |

"This is ecological Ground Zero." The first thing that has to be done is to get the municpalities surrounding SMR to agree on what to do. The report from the Audobon Society, with other environmental groups sharing its concern, should be a wake-up call to local officials who have been content to allow the stalemate to continue. GET TOGETHER AND DO SOMETHING. Otherwise, when SMR is completely deforested, and landscaping has been destroyed in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, you have to accept the blame. You just can't say it's the county's fault. If the towns got together and agree on a course of action, then present it to the county. This is what the county said - it can't do anything until the munipalities agree on a course of action. STOP PASSING THE BUCK. |

I believe County Executive Joey D, showing his soft side, has banned using professional hunters to cull the herd in the SMR. A couple of years ago Millburn, showing its tough side, used this approach on Township land and there was a noticeable decrease in the herd the next year.

Seemed like when Milburn started the hunt the deer came to our side of the reservation. |
