I know that there have been similar threads in the past but I am really frustrated when I drive through the Village and see the Beifus Eyesore. It looks awful at best. It is time that a durable, opaque fence be insisted on by residents and trustees. A solid wood fence that doesn't require regular repairs. Perhaps some local students would even be willing to paint murals on it. This would dramatically improve things at least for the time being. Where does Mr. Beifus live? We should organize a protest in front of his home to loudly and clearly express our disgust for his neglect of SO Village.

AZ, After two years I have gotten used to it. Besides, with holes in the fence you can take pictures of the progress that has been made.
Take heart, there is an election coming up so a new fence might go up the week before May 10th. There is also the possibility of some demolition taking place on the Vose Ave side of the Shop-Rite site. |

That looks like a bomb crater. If it weren't for the trees in the background, I'd have thought the photo was taken in Iraq! |

On the village website (www.southorange.org), it says that Beifus plans to start construction in MARCH. Since the developer's agreement is going to be discussed for the first time tonight and at AT LEAST one more meeting, it is a virtual certainty construction WILL NOT start in March (2005). A condition of the developer's agreement should be to put up a real fence while the project is "Coming Soon". Residents get fined when they leave their property in poor condition. This should be no exception. |

This afternoon I saw two men spray painting over the graffiti(sp) that was on the wind screen at Beifus. The mismatch color of their paint makes the fence look worse. Thank you Mr.Beifus. I hope you sleep easy at night despite the blight. VOTE POGANY |

just me, I was attempting sarcasm. Of course you shouldn't be surprised when the incumbents tout the hole as progress. Dan |

I vote we take a full page ad out in Seton Hall Prep's next ad journal. We can let them know what we think of their board member. http://www.shp.org/Home/Alumni/Notables/Board_of_Trustees/board_of_trustees.html |

How about going to the link SO Lady was good enough to provide and down at the bottom click on "leave word." This gives you an opportunity to send a message to Seton Hall to let them know that Andrew Beifus has created an eyesore in their community. |

I do think we should come up with a pool for the last minute election high-jinks i.e. will shop rite come down the week before the election, will bulldozers arrive at beifus, will there be a ground breaking at SOPAC (oops, forgot we already had a ground breaking). What will the action be to give the impression of progress being made in our downtown. FOr any newcomers reading this, 7 and a half years ago when we first began looking to move to SO, we heard about the SHop Rite being redeveloped, a hotel going where Beifus is and the sopac being built. Do not believe any promises made by the current administration. In more than seven years they have accomplished no meaningful development. |

My $$$$$ is on either of the predictions I posted in the SO Elections thread. And I don't mean hinting at an actual budget for SOPAC or eloquent descriptions of the progress in fundraising. A resolution at the least! Shall we start with a fin as ante? |

doublea, How can "site preparation" begin before a developer's agreement be finalized? I thought "site preparation" began TWO YEARS AGO when he tore down the original eyesore building the week before the last election. |

MHD, direct from the SO offical WEB site: http://www.southorange.org/redevelopment.asp click on Beifus Site. Look at the current status which states at the moment: "South Orange Village - Beifus Mercedes (9 W. South Orange Ave) On December 12, 2002, the Planning Board approved this project. The old Mercedes dealership and the Music Lovers building was demolished in May 2003 and the new structure will be erected in their place. The developer is currenlty obtaining his State permits from the DCA and will then finalize construction bids. All other approvals have been obtained and only the final developers agreement need to be negotiated so that construction will begin. It is anticipated that this will occur in 2004." |

The Village President said that Beifus was going to begin site preparation even before the tax abatement ordinance is passed at second reading in two weeks. Beifus doesn't need any building permit to start site prepartion. Who do you think asked Beifus to start site preparation? |

What we need is an ordinance decreeing that there shall be elections every 3 months. Then we'll see real progress.

Dear MOL, My wife and I went shopping at the gourmet market today. You know, the old Shoprite building. Our son graduated college last week and we're throwing him a party so we had to stock up on party supplies. So after the South Orange Gourmet Market, we hit the mall that's under that Hotel where the old Beifus building used to be. What a great place to shop locally. (Remember all those silly "coming soon" signs in 2005. What a hoot!) The party is on Saturday, but Sunday we're taking him to see a great comedy called "BOARD of TRUSTEES" at the South Orange Performing Arts Center. You should see it, It's a funny musical on how not to govern a town. By the way, do you know a good place to eat after a show in this town? I remember a little red restaurant and bar called Bunny's. It collapsed and fell into a huge hole where the SOPAC now stands. Too bad. I would've liked to take our son there. Especially since Seton Hall is the favorite to win the national championship this year. FYI, Town Hall Deli is finally reopening next week. I heard the $76 sloppy Joe is the best in town. Talk to you soon, South Orange President Smith. March 16th 2026.
