For those of you that don't know what this is, it's primary purpose is to raise awareness in both the police and civilian communities about the National Law Enforcement Officer's Memorial. The Unity Tour's secondary purpose is to raise funds for the National Law Enforcement Officer's Memorial as well as the National Law Enforcement Officer's Museum. The ride (May 9-13) is held to coincide with National Polce Week. Here is the official website. Link : http://www.policeunitytour.com/ A number of South Orange Police officers will be participating in the 300+ mile ride this year which will leave from Livingston to ground zero to Washington DC. For most officers this minuscule sacrifice honors their fellow officers who have given their lives in the line of duty & pays respect to surviving family members. A total of 1,658 law enforcement officers died in the line of duty during the past 10 years, an average of one death every 53 hours or 166 per year. There were 145 law enforcement officers killed in 2003 All riders are required to raise donations for the Memorial, Museum, & costs inccured during the trip. If anyone is interested in helping out, by sponsoring, contact the community relations dept at the So. Orange Police Headquarters(even the smallest amount helps )Tax ID numbers are available and the website has printable sponsor forms that you can keep for your records. Thank you |
