I am totally confused

I read in the Star-Ledger, News Record and here on MOL, about the former Columbia H.S. students law suit, I read the notice that was sent to the parents and not once were the students names once meantioned or were they left out?
My other question is couldn't the letter have been obtained through the FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT?
