Came in the mail yesterday. What a hoot! There was so much spin in there, the paper itself seemed to be moving. No mention whatsoever of how long anything is taking, just comments about things that have, according to this report, been done. You'd almost think that tenants are on the verge of moving into the luxury apartments that will be (oh, some day, possibly) on the Beifus or Market sites.

Shoulda been titled "Behold! The Calabrese Miracles, Revealed!"

You beat me to it, notehead. I received the same miraculous missive in yesterday's mail and was planning to post something appropriately scathing last night.

But as I was having a really ugly toilet in my main bathroom replaced last night, I got distracted by all the shiny new porcelain and missed the boat. I'm just surprised that it took this long for a fellow resident to comment

Question: Who paid for that bit of propoganda?

I'm also curious if the contents was approved by the BOT? Does it have to be?

Perhaps Mergele could christen the new toilet by flushing this annual report load of doo-doo down it.

It hit me that elections are a few weeks away. Did your "progress" report was blank just as mine?

I especially liked the comment that the Tony Smith sculpture would be a "financial asset" for the town. That is only true if we would/could sell it to raise funds, and I can't imagine that (in fact, the terms of a gift would probably forbid it).

What a combination of old news, fractured syntax (Calbrese's first sentance on the cover sounded like it was from a fortune cookie), and typos.

How much did this cost the taxpayers, and which people signed off on it?

I was looking for a YEAR on the document, since it looks virtually identical to a progress report & Gaslight I read back in 1999!

Excerpt from the Village Charter that provides for the Village President to present an annual "State of the Village" message.

4.4 Powers and Duties; Generally. The Village President shall:
(a) Report annually in writing to the Board of Trustees on the condition of the village, and the work of the previous year;

Why are department heads tasked with updating the Village's web site? That was weird. How about let department heads do their jobs and let their administrative staff update it?

That's Management 101

Did anyone notice under 'Redevelopment' that there is 25,500 sq. feet of new retail space? New Market square 1500 ft and Vose Ave building 5k sq. ft; Beifus 12,000 sq ft and Sayid Plaza with 7k sq ft. As I look around SO, there are for rent signs in a lot of retail space now, who and what will fill over 25,000 sq ft of retail space?? Imagine all the 'For Rent' signs.

At no point was I asked or told about the piece. It was not given nor shown to the BOT (as a whole, but it is possilbe that one or more members of the BOT saw it in advance). I came home from vacation yesterday and saw it for the first time.

Dave: The department heads are responsible for making sure the material on their area of the website is accurate. They can have someone on their staff actually update the site.

All of the police department vehicles are equiped with what?? umm, if technology is a rear defrost button then those cars are the cream of the crop, as far as "newer" equipment actually conducive to good police work, you'll only find it in about FOUR vehicles

To my knowledge no member of the BoT saw the progress report before it was sent out.

I don't mean to sound flip but do I understand that the Village President drafted, approved and paid to mail a progress report completely on his own? The same village president who has several conflicts of interest with the redevelopment of this town? It's time for a change...

This State of the Village message, an annual requirement according to our Village Charter, is solely the responsibility of the Village President, similar to the State of the Union message each year by the US President.

You want rebuttal? Here it is:

How come, in the past 14 years of Calabrese's dictatorship, never once did we have a "State of the Village" address mailed to every residence? Does this propaganda have anything to do with the fact that Calabrese's slate of "Village Independents" are running? Am I, the taxpayer, supposed to pay for that piece of #%&##* ???

you are wasting your and this town's energy to make such a stink about a single direct mail piece!

you cannot possibly second guess EVERY decision made. talk about micro managing.

put some effort toward the BIG stuff -- and to heck with the little stuff.

Maybe it should be up to the Village residents to come up with a STATE OF THE VILLAGE address. We seem to be the only ones who speak honestly about the state of the village (which, by the way is in shambles). What a bunch of political BULLS#*T.
Here's a new State of the Village message titled, "COMING SOON".......NOTHING!!!

Sorry, Pete, but I serve on a volunteer board in Maplewood/South Orange, and mass-mailings are a huge bone of contention, budget-wise, every year. In fact, we can't afford them so do not use them.

But I'm glad to know how cavalierly our tax dollars are spent on not only mailing, but designing, writing, and printing this obvious pre-campaign dossier on the accomplishments of 2004.

Who designed it? Who wrote it? Who printed it?

I doubt very much it was done "in-house." There is not one reference to its origin. No credit provided.

Other than that given to the great and powerful Oz.

bets, the piece speaks for itself.

if its within the authority of the village president to issue such a document, and it certainly wasn't lavishly produced or printed, then lets leave this alone and get back to the big stuff.

Pete
