I take the train from Brick Church (E. Orange) to NY. Two weeks ago, my headlights were stolen from my '03 Acura TL. I was parked on the street since the parking lot is full and closed to daily parkers there by 7:15.

So I figured I'd try taking the train from South Orange instead since South Orange is supposedly a "nicer area". But after talking to people I've heard of at least two other people who have had their headlights stolen in South Orange! Has anyone experienced this in either South Orange or any neighboring towns?

I'm beginning to think it's not such a good idea driving this car to the station but as of now I have no choice.

(I won't even get into the parking situation at South Orange. I'm finding out the hard way how bad it is.)

brad,

the problem is having the xeon headlights as in the audis, acruas, bmws and other type vehicles. over the past year and a half there has been a rash of these types of thefts throughought essex and union counties and even farther west into morris county.

the only solution to his problem is to not have the headlights these people are after.
the thefts take place during the day, at night, on the street, in driveways everywhere in the maplewood south orange area.

A co-worker of mine had his lights stolen THREE times from our parking lot at work in Florham Park. The police are aware of this, but since the thieves can get away with your lights in under five minutes there's not much they can do.

e roberts is right -- just stay away from cars with xenon lights. Think about your insurance rates!

Eroberts: It is a problem everywhere, not just in S. Orange and Maplewood. Sometimes all you need is a screwdriver.

We had the headlights stolen (Acura 3.2TL) from an patrolled office parking lot in Roseland.
A CHS student had them stolen from her parent's car in the Parker Ave student lot this week for the second time this year.

The good news about the TL is that it's impossible for thieves to steal the whole car (computer chip required to start).

Great...so it will only cost you 500 deductible each time your headlights are taken...

After reading this, I guess the police are really aware of this problem, becuase I was getting off the train and returning to my non acura in the lot of the train station and noticed a S.O. Police officer driving around the lot circling cars and he even got out and was looking at the front ends of cars in the back corner...I assume possibly checking for lack of headlights?

Found this in the paper yesterday. Seems to be a state wide problem
MORRISTOWN -- Headlights were stolen from about 30 foreign luxury sedans and high-end SUVs Monday afternoon at the NJ Transit lot on Morris Street and Lafayette Avenue.
The thieves worked quickly in a steady downpour at the train station and took headlights, some of them expensive xenon models, from Acuras, Audis, Infinitis and Jeeps, police said.
A pair of xenons cost about $2,200, and are commonly factory-installed on high-end luxury foreign sedans.
Wilcox explained it takes trained personnel about 30 seconds to detach the headlights. Wilcox said he thinks the thieves waited "for lousy weather" to come and target the lot.
Meanwhile, several cars were burglarized on Monday at the Parsippany Sheraton. Again, suspects stole headlights from a 2003 Infiniti. The driver's side window also was smashed. Parsippany police also reported headlights were stolen from a 2004 Acura parked on Woodhollow Road, while a headlight theft was attempted on a 2005 Audi parked at 300 Lanidex Plaza

All the more reason to leave the Hummer in the garage and drive my '76 Malibu.

I wouldn't consider a car with xenon headlights, both because of the theft issue and because I think that the danger of blinding oncoming traffic is greater than the advantage of added brightness on crowded Jersey roads(as a driver I hate the things!)

Still, Brad, my sympathies on the theft.

Dave-"The good news about the TL is that it's impossible for thieves to steal the whole car (computer chip required to start). "

let me guess, the dealer told you that. No vehicle is immposible to steal, truth is a TL's can and do get stolen, usually in under a minute. If a pro car thief wants/needs your car they WILL take it
