Hello everybody. I am delighted to have found this message board. I plan to jump into the action in the mosh pit soon, but first, let me just say how much we love living in South Orange. My wife and I moved here from Staten Island, a borough run into the ground by guys in white shoes. It is so nice to be able to walk downtown to catch an express train to Manhattan, or just to pick up an ice cream cone to enjoy at a baseball game in the park. We walk to the courts at Baird Center, we treat ourselves to special brews at the Gaslight to put back the calories we might have lost playing tennis, we linger at the very adult bar at Papillion’s, we lounge around the beautiful pool all summer every chance we get. When we want a truly special dinner, we let Carlo cook for us at Café Arugula. We love that the trucks are out promptly picking up leaves and branches in the fall, sweeping the streets, and as soon as the snow starts, promptly plowing and salting. Every spring we rush to get our allotment of humus and mulch, recycled from those leaves and branches. Whenever we can take a breather from work and gardening, we can be found lounging out in our yard, chatting with neighbors who walk by, or with the many house hunters walking through our neighborhood, ogling the wonderfully varied architecture, and noting the pride with which our neighbors maintain their properties. Fences and high hedges are rare and sidewalks are universal all around town, which gives the community an open and inviting feeling. At night the gaslights bathe the streets so delicately. We luck to be one of just two towns in New Jersey to still have these jewels. I could go on for pages more. But you get the picture. We are happy here. Is it perfect? No. But it has many many advantages, and we count our luck stars we are here!

South Orange indeed is a wonderful community, for all the reasons George Finlay posted, and for its diverse mix of residents, their many talents and contributions to the fabric of this village, and because of its proximity to Manhattan's and Newark's resources, major sports and performance venues, NJ Transit, an international airport, South Mountain Reservation, the mountains, the shore, and so many highways to get there. However, it could be an extraordinary community if downtown redevelopment could ever get on track. |

My mother always said that she would have married "George Finlay" if she had not married my father. He must have been a romantic! Relative? |

Can't believe I screwed that up. Of course it's Butch Larkin. I stand corrected, Mark et al. |
