My neighbors and I in Maplewood are taking care of a sweet, friendly stray dog who we fear was abandoned. He is a tan and black mutt shephard mix, medium-sized, about 1 or 2 years old. We have named him Ben. I have called the Maplewood, South Orange, Millburn and Union police departments to see if they had any reports of missing dogs. No luck. I have also spoken to Ruth Perlmutter at the Jersey Animal Coalition and she was kind enough to let me know the procedure for getting him declared a stray dog in Maplewood so he can be eventually taken to the JAC's new, no-kill shelter. We are in the process of doing this now. IF ANYBODY WULD CONSIDER ADOPTING BEN, PLEASE CALL ME. HE'S ON MY DECK TODAY AND MAY BE WITH US THROUGH THE NIGHT IF THE TOWN ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICER CAN'T BE LOCATED TODAY. I am in love with this dog and it breaks my heart that we can't adopt him. (We have a cranky old cat who wouldn't take kindly to a frisky young dog in the house :-( Ben would be a perfect dog for a family with little kids. He ADORES children and LOVES to play fetch. This is truly one of the best dogs I have ever run across. Please call me if you would consider adopting him or know of someone who might. Thanks. Marian and Matt: 973-763-8388 |

Marian, I would love to adopt Ben but I already have a full house with lots of pets. Please reconsider not taking Ben in yourself. I, too, brought a dog home with a cranky male tom cat as the alpha in the household. Sure, he didn't like it, the sounds coming out of that cat every time he saw the dog for the first 6 months...well it sounded almost alien. But now, they behave like brother and sister. He's mellowed out and accepted her and she's realized that he's the alpha in the house and to back down when challenged. It's comical too - they even play this game, I call it 'Clash of the Titans'. My kitty lays on his back with his paws in the air while my dog runs up, bites him in the ear and jumps back. They really really enjoy each other now. I know you may think that cat will have nothing to do with it but trust me, he/she will come around! At least give it a shot and if it doesn't work out, no harm no foul. |

Lilred, I hear you and I WISH I could adopt him. What I didn't mention earlier was that in addition to the cat issue, my better half is not a dog lover and just keeping Ben on the deck tonight has brought me into the proverbial "doghouse." The good news is that a couple of families have expressed interest in Ben and one actually drove over to meet him tonight. In any case, the town animal control officer should be over to pick him up tomorrow and then after about a week at a local vet's office, he will be taken to the JAC shelter in South Orange.

UPDATE: Ben was picked up by the Maplewood Animal Control Officer and taken to the Maplewood Animal Hospital on Springfield Ave. this morning. (I called the hospital this afternoon and he's doing well.) If he is not claimed by his "owner" by next Monday the 18th, he will go into the custody of the Jersey Animal Coalition (JAC) and they will handle his adoption. If you're interested in adopting him, please contact the JAC at: 973-763-7322. Two families called me over the weekend expressing interest in Ben and one even came over last night to meet him! I will update on MOL if I hear anything else. |
