I've now been reading MOL and the postings, new and old. I'm just wondering how many of you have volunteered to be on one of the numerous committees in the Village or are you content to sit behind your screen names. It's very cowardly to call names and talk about what people haven't done and not have the guts to come and say who you are. If you think you can do a better job than those in office, then do SOMETHING. Maybe you don't have the time to commit to being a Trustee, but there are a lot of other committees and things you can do for South Orange. But if all you can do is sit in your home on your computer than please think before you post your message. It's fine to disagree with someone, but it's not necessary to attack the person. Stick to the facts, just the facts. Please remember these people have a spouse, children, parents, etc. and it hurts to read your unnecessary comments. I have a bet with Mark, I say at least one of you will come forward and join something. Please let me be right. Linda |

Some anonymous posters are on committees and volunteer their time to community groups. I don't see how using an anonymous login precludes someone from being a good citizen. |

I'm not saying all the anonymous posters are not good citizens. It seems to me that many are hiding behind their screen name. I would like to hear from them under their real names and what they're doing to help South Orange. I would doubt that GTG has done anything productive for the Village but would be happy to learn I was wrong. |

Linda: I'm quite certain that GTG will NEVER divulge her real name. Of course, she's probably sobered up by now (one must hope), and feeling horribly ashamed of her atrocious rant. -s. BTW: As one who hides behind a screen name, I agree with What'sHisName... |

Hi, Linda-- What committees are looking for members? What sorts of time commitments are we talking about? What skill sets are required? I am sure that many would be glad to serve, if only they knew how--and if they knew that they could afford the time. |

I am curious about the commitment that would be involved, as well. Please tell us more about the ocmmittees in question. |

The village clerk would know all the openings and she is the one you should contact (973-378-7715, ext.1).

Linda, I had actually contacted Mark last year and volunteered for the Technology Focus Group, but never heard back. BTW - As much as I actually like Mark, his track record on MOL bets isn't very good. mmmmmm......ice cream. |

It makes me very happy to see there are those who want to volunteer. Unfortunately those who attack have not bothered to respond and I doubt any will. I know there's an opening on the Board of Health. They meet the second Thursday of every month (except August I think). I would think they are putting together a commitee for the 4th of July festivities and I'm sure help would be appreciated. It's not only important to serve on a committee but also to attend meetings. Everyone should go to the Trustee meetings so they can be heard, but maybe even more important so they can see what is really going on instead of counting on a third party to inform them (and nine times out of ten getting it wrong.) I think it's also important to attend the Board of Education meetings especially if you have a child(ren) in the school system. You should be informed about the goings on. I really do appreciate those who responded |

Mrs. Rosner and Mark, Please don't take my last post as sarcasm - it wasn't meant to be (I really would like to be part of a BOT University Committee) but I know it is hard to tell if someone is being sarcastic online. I have spoken about this will some of the trustees and they have seemed open to it. I think it would be great if we could link such a committee to the VLC. Let me know, Brian |

Linda, If I really had a life, I'd love to get involved, but with work and family commitments, I don't feel that I would be able to fulfill whatever requirements would be needed. Maybe someday that will change. |

Linda, I do not have an anonymous screen name, your husband and hundreds of other MOLers know that my name is Bets. They know my last name too. It's Black. Bets is shortened from Betsy which is shortened from Elizabeth. I guess, as the youngest of 11 children, the shorter the name the better. Ha-ha-ha. I find your post to be a bit defensive, and since I'm often accused in this topic of defensive/offensive behavior, I just want you to know that I understand completely where you're coming from in your position. I do volunteer locally, on the First Night board; at work,I am on the University Staff/Administration board and the Joint Affirmative Action committee. The latter is the biggest commitment, as learning how to be an EEO counselor on a job search is really complicated; the chair (and EEO officer of the university) has made it quite plain that this is a multi-year commitment (and this is my first year) and I have committed to at least 5. So yes, there are many volunteers in our community, which is what helps to make it so great. For anyone who inquired, First Night always needs volunteers (putting up posters, distributing flyers, serving on the Board, etc.) and it's a really great organization. If anyone would like more info, feel free to private-line me. |

I need to clarify one thing, I hope I didn't get anyone too excited or too upset, Mark told me last night he has not decided if he will run again, I just assumed he would. Now, MHD I won your ice cream (there's supposed to be a smiley face after that but I'm having trouble inserting it. BMO no offense taken and please call me Linda Bets you're right I am defensive. I don't like anyone attacking one of my family members when they probably don't even know who he is. vermontgolfer, I do understand that family and work come first and it is very hard to dedicate the time needed. Our daughter is grown so being home in the evening is not the same for Mark any more. Sometimes I get upset about the amount of time he has to give, but I know it comes with the territory. That's something everyone needs to understand, even if you don't agree with the Trustees and others you have to give them credit for their dedication. gibby, there is an opening on the Board of Health. They meet the second Thursday of every month except for the summer. The meetings run anywhere from 45 minutes to over an hour. Lizziecat, sorry no one contacted you, if you're interested in the Board of Health you should submit a resume and you can give it to Mark. No health training or knowledge is necessary. I don't know how to sign up for the 4th of July, maybe you should contact the Village Clerk. Mark just told me that two people contacted him about being on committees. Maybe all that had to be done was to send out the need. It would be so wonderful to see new faces working for South Orange.

Linda -- I serve as Chair of the South Orange Citizens Budget Advisory Committee and would be happy to help people get involved in the work that the CBAC does in advising the BOT about matters related to the Village budget and budget process. I had been posting information about our meetings, but had slacked off a little bit over the last few months. Anyone who is interested should feel free to come to the next CBAC meeting which is currently scheduled for Thursday, May 19 at 7:00 p.m. at Village Hall. Alternatively, people can feel free to contact me by e-mail at harold.colton-max@verizon.net. Finally, if you want more information about the CBAC, its memembership, its mission, statements and minutes from recent meetings, you should go to the Village Web Site, pull down the menu under "Village Government", select "Boards" and then select "CBAC". Thanks for bringing this subject up and permitting me the opportunity to make a pitch (again) for volunteers for the CBAC. -- Harold |
