Aunt, that's a great idea. We'll have to email Dave to make sure he sees/hears the idea. Also, looking ahead, what will we do when Jennifer graduates? Who will "push" event information to us then? (With any luck she'll change her major five or six times and graduate in, say, ten years!) |

Haha! It's funny to think everyone is worried about me graduating already! I'm only a freshman and am in the middle of exams right now. Although looking back on the year, it seems like everything has flown by so fast, I feel like its just taking forever right now! One thing that is very unique about the VLC is that we are constantly recruiting younger members and teaching them everything we know. (How do you think I got involved with this?) So, whoever my successor is will hopefully continue in spreading the word on Seton Hall events. And if that's not comforting enough , right now I think I am going to do the five year program here, which means I will get my Bachelors Degree and Masters within five years. So, I could be around for a bit longer too! Right now the South Orange community and Seton Hall University are in the process of improving relations. We have made so much progress thus far! Hopefully by the time I graduate, both South Orange and Seton Hall will have made large strides and my services here will no longer be necessary. Also, rumor around SHU has it that a new public relations person is being hired to, well, do what I'm doing right now. If that's true, then I'm no longer needed here either! Also, posting things in other, more prominent places is a great idea. I'm willing to accept suggestions! Just make sure you include how to get in touch with those people... a few people have given me names of individuals in the community to talk to, but its rather difficult without a phone number, email address or the like! Let's focus on the present here. We have so much monentum going, no need to stop now! And thanks everyone for all the ideas you have been sending me. Keep them coming! lackieje@shu.edu (By the way: One exam down, three to go! )

Jennifer, I'm adding my thanks to those you've already received. I am actually the communications director for a Manhattan law school, so it's extremely interesting for me to observe SHU trying new strategies to improve community relations between the school and the town. I am also glad to see readers of this thread responding with their own ideas and suggestions -- it's very instructive! Of course, as you said, you're in finals right now and the fact that you have made time to post so regularly is terrific. I hope that the VLC is working hand in hand with SHU's administration, because this initiative is too big and too important for you and your colleagues to carry on your own. Here's my communications suggestion: Instead of an e-mail mailing list or a Web site, both of which were mentioned in earlier posts, how about a blog site that serves both purposes? These are extremely easy to set up using a popular interface like Typepad, and you would just add your own postings for new events. These postings could then be assigned categories, like "concerts" or "lectures" or "exhibits," to make it easier for residents to seek out events they're specifically interested in. And a blog provides the option for users to subscribe to it with RSS feed. (You can also turn off the function where readers reply to postings if you'd rather use it as more of a bulletin board than an interactive forum.) Good luck on your exams, and please keep the dialogue with us all going -- it's very welcome! |

Wordgirl - Right now, Maplewood Online is the easiest way for residents to find out things happening on campus. It's all part of the Village Liaison Committee, a committee designed to improve town-gown relations. We do work hand in hand with the adminstration and we have their full support. Using MOL is rather new to me, but right now its the easiest option. Posting something here is relatively fast and easy. We are looking in to other options such as physical advertisements in town, community calendars in local newspapers, etc. Right now, however, I just don't have the time to seriously investigate any of those options. (School comes first!) When I come back this fall though, I will certainly be looking for avenues other than MOL to get events publicized. To be completely honest, I had never thought of using a blog. I want to make the announcment of campus events as easily accessible as possible, so that everyone (including those of us who aren't as technologically savvy) can find out what's going on on campus. Do you think a blog would be the most effective and easily accessible option? I do like the idea of being able to catergorize events, which isn't very easy here on MOL, but perhaps easier with a website or blog... What are other people's thoughts on this? The more the merrier! (And by the way, I survived my Economics exam today! Only International Relations and Statistics left! )

Congrats, Jennifer! I wouldn't go anywhere near econ when I was in school, although I'm sure it would have been a more practical choice than classical civilization, much as I loved the classics... Anyway, a blog is just as accessible as a Web site. I should preface by saying that I am NOT shilling for TypePad -- it's just that I am not a techie person by any means and TypePad is the only service I know that you can use to set up a blog. You do have to subscribe to have them host your blog, but their basic service is $4.95 a month. Check them out at http://www.typepad.com/. I'm sure that there are more Web-savvy readers of this forum who can be of more help than me -- or maybe some of your colleagues/classmates are already familiar with blogs and how they work and how to set one up, and can help you explore this concept further. |

No, not positive, but funny. (And true) Although, trashing Seton Hall will only make more work for people to clean up there. The students wouldn't care a bit. |

Hi everyone. First, on a positive note - all of my exams are finished and I survived! Yay! Second of all, I am really sorry that some Seton Hall students disregard their community and trash your prooerty. Although we are making strides to fix this problem, please understand that we cannot control other peoples actions, only educate them on how their decisions affect both Seton Hall and South Orange. I am sorry that they are making bad choices because it puts Seton Hall in a bad light, but please don't make the incorrect assumption that ALL Seton Hall students act that way. I agree, their actions are rude and disrespectful, and again, I apologize. Maybe eventually the students who are action inappropriately will grow up and realize that they are just being dumb and juvenile. With that said, I would certainly hope the residents of South Orange could be the "bigger people" in this situation and work pro-actively to resolve the problem. It is only together, as Seton Hall and South Orange, that these issues can be resolved. I hope that the residents of South Orange will be able to take advantage of the opportunities that Seton Hall has to offer them without simulataneously destroying the campus. As my mother has always told me "two wrongs do not make a right", and I know that revenge on either side is not going to make this situation any worse. With all of that said above, I am the finance director of the Village Liaison Committee. I am posting Seton Hall events open to the public because I feel it will open up SHU to the community and will create positive interactions between the South Orange community and Seton Hall students. I don't have to do this, I want to. So far, all of the feedback (except for Nanny's comment) has been very positive and I have been getting TONS of emails from residents with suggestions, questions etc. These relations are the exact sort of things I want to be involved in. There are other students on the Village Liaison Committee who can discuss particular issues with students, etc with you, if you so desire. I, however, would just like to work on these positive relations and get residents on to campus. Therefore, if you have particular issues with students or with Seton Hall, I ask that you take them up in another thread. Perhaps the "Seton Hall" thread would be a good option. Sheena Collum, Brian O'Malley and Kristen Williamson are all prepared to deal with specific issues between residents and students, so please comment on those sorts of things there. Here's an idea: We are working on developing more community service opportunities for students in the community. Perhaps cleaning up resident's lawns the day after a party would be a good service project. Any ideas on how we could get this off the ground? Good idea? Terrible idea? So, I want this thread to focus on the positive relations between Seton Hall and South Orange. If you have negative things to say, I understand, and I apologize, but please take those up elsewhere. (I'm a full-time student! I can't deal with everything that comes up!) Thank you for your consideration in this matter. Continue to send me your emails! I love making connections with the residents! lackieje@shu.edu Oh, and obviously, many students are going home for the summer now, as will I. I will continue to post here, however, throughout the summer, although my guess is that not a heck will be going on. Once the fall semester starts, tons of things will be happening here. Hopefully by then we will have discovered another avenue for advertising campus events, but until that happens I'll continue to post here. Have a wonderful summer everyone! |

It is fascinating how the young students in this thread who, supposedly, are in the process of maturing to wiser individuals but not there yet, prove to be so much-much-more mature than many of the posters on MOL. Just read the posts above. Jennifer and Sheena are trying, in a cooperative spirit, to bring the two communities out of years of hostilities, misunderstandings, ignorance, and plain old nastiness, and here we have people like Soda and Nanny who resist such noble efforts with their sarcasm and cheap wise-cracks. Nanny, if you are really a nanny I dread the teachings that your children get from you. Soda, get a life. Jennifer and Sheena I know you have the wisdom to ignore them. Unfortunately you will always find in your paths wise-asses like them; please don't let them discourage you. Your efforts are praiseworthy and I, and the majority of our community, appreciate them and thank you. |

Hardly a shocker, but... "Seton Hall demotes dean critical of church's homosexuality stance October 28, 2005 SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. -- A gay associate dean at Seton Hall University, a Roman Catholic institution, has been demoted after criticizing the church's position on homosexuality, according to published reports. A letter written by W. King Mott, 44, who has been an associate dean at the school for three years, was published Oct. 19 in The Star-Ledger of Newark. Mott, who is openly gay and said he lives with his partner, wrote in the letter that that the Catholic church is unfairly attacking gay men and making them scapegoats for the church's pedophile scandal. The following day, the school's dean, Molly Smith, asked Mott to step down, saying he had confused his position with the university's by writing in his letter that he is an associate dean at the school, Mott and a university spokesman told The Star-Ledger for Friday newspapers. Mott, who has been working at Seton Hall for the last seven years, said a university should be a place for free expression of ideas but said he holds no ill will toward Smith. "She works for a Roman Catholic institution," Mott said. "If the church didn't have this position (against homosexuality) no dean would have to be so guarded on this issue." A university spokesman, Tom White, said it was "inappropriate" for Mott to speak against the Catholic Church or its policies while identifying himself as part of Seton Hall's administration. Mott said next Friday will be his last day as an associate dean, and although he also teaches in the school's political science department, Mott said he will begin looking for a new job. Information from: The Star-Ledger, http://www.nj.com/starledger" I should mention: The vast majority of Divine Entities in my personal address book support Mr. Mott's critique. Of course, SHU takes a different view. Not that there's anything wrong with that... Go in peace. --The Oracle of MOL |

Well Pizzaz, there's a lot of newcomers this year and I, too, look forward to what they have to offer. Games are so much more fun when we are winning! And John (and anyone else), if you go to a game, come down to the pep band and say hi during half time! (I'm the only female, blonde trumpet player!) GO PIRATES |

Seton Hall is the Evil Empire to residents of South Orange. They are the largest owner of real estate, the pay little or no taxes and they use over 50% of the services of just the Fire Department alone! They warehouse propery and then sell it for big profits after a couple years. They can recruit for a nationally ranked basketball team but can't provide a dime if assistance in paying for the services they drain from the taxpayers of this village. It is high time we the taxpayers of South Orange start playing hard ball with the University - it's time we stop using taxpayers money to help support SHU - case in point - at the recycling center there are no commerical vehicles allowed to dump material - I've observed Seton Hall commercial vans dumping trash bins full of paper on numerous occassions all in front of the keen eyes of our dilligent village employees. This is just the tip of the iceberg, it will not change until we get new representation on our board of Trustees - this will come - when taxes get reassessed in 2-3 years ; and village taxpayers go into shock - the focus should be on Seton Hall. |

Politicalmon: You should start your own thread about tax exempt entities including SHU. This thread was a positive focused one and would like to see Jennifer continue posting the updates without having some attack SHU (as if she was the problem).
