We eat in the bar at Toro Loco with our son every week -- I've never noticed it smokey in there. |

Bunny's is smokey. I hope for the day restaurants go smoke free because I really make Bunny's a last choice b/c of the smoke-and I really like their pizza too. On the subject of disappointing places to eat, I try to like the Blue Moon Diner. It's at a great location. I like the decor although I could do without all the TV's blaring. The food is always disappointing. How can you ruin eggs or a hot dog. The eggs are cold and the hot dog is cooked so its got a leather casing. Too bad. I hope it improves. |

User58-Ok I agree it is not much of a brewery as it is a resteraunt. I also concur that their beer taste like swill. Gaslight Bites! |

Ginny-Brown, Just an FYI - Bunny's has a bistro (second door in from Trenchard Place, the driveway to the transit parking lot) that is smoke free and full-service. (Love your name BTW - I have an Aunt Ginny and I'm a Greene Black!) |

I eat in the bar area of Toro Loco often, also (algebra - I think I might have seen you & straw and your son there a few Fridays ago...? wasn't sure.) There are occasional smokers - it's a bar, but I wouldn't call it a smokey room - but I prefer to sit there anyway, usually when a game is on the big TV. Now that it's nice, I'll be doing more outdoor dining there. User58 - I agree with you that Gaslight is "a neighborhood restaurant that makes some lousy beer", however, I do actually enjoy an occasional meal there with my mother. The food has never been disappointing for me, and like I said previously, I've seen a huge improvement in service. |

Strings -- I bet that was us. Our son is very cute - tall with brown hair, never sits still and was hopping between talking with Oscar at the bar, playing video golf and eating their basket of mints by the door. I don't smoke (well, at parties I smoke sometimes). I've never found Toro smokey -- I guess I am not very sensitive to it though |

I find it very smokey. Go there sit in the bar area look towards the bar. The glasses hang upside down over the bar. When someone at the bar smokes the smoke rises and you can watch it swirl around inside the glasses. Order a drink and you will see the bartender reach for a glass and make your drink...in the same glass that was full of smoke. very appetizing. You do not believe me then go there and watch for yourself |

I think it's time to move off this subject and find another bar/restaurant or two: one that is really good, and another that really sucks so we can lambaste it as well. |

Bets- Thanks. I seem to be aging into my name and like it more these days! If that's the entrance next to the bar, with about 5 tables, it's better than the bar area, but it was still smokey when I've been there. Maybe I hit it on bad days or something. |

I agree with most of the sentiment on this thread. I do think the food is decent. I have eaten there recently. It is convenient and easier to find parking. Instead of us complaining about the situation, let us find a solution. I propose the following: We coordinate a date for "Family Night at The Gas Light Brewery". Every parent must bring at least one child under 10 years of age. The more children the better, the younger the children even better yet (don't forget to bring your own seat for the real little ones). Have your children bring their friends. Maybe the owners will realize the opportunity they are missing out on? Might our show of unity inspire the owners to recognize that the community supports local business? Might we be surprised by the institution of a children's menu, high chairs and free balloons on Thursday evenings? |

Jeff, how subversive! How clever! Your out-of-the-box thinking benefits this village, even if a plurality of voters didn't see it that way. If Family Night at Gaslight comes to be, count us and our almost-six-year-old in! |

Walker, if the owner does that, (a) I betcha Bunny's or Lot 15 or Toro Loco would love the revenue when we all switch to Plan B en masse; (b) won't the owner look like a jerk if the press is tipped off? |

Probably the service that night will just suck. Oh wait... the service always sucks. All that will do is make the staff very angry. A lot of people will end up getting spit in their food I bet. |

SO Nanny: This thread was about the Brewery, not the duck pond, but maybe you would like to start a thread about cleaning up the pond as your project. Jeff: Let me borrow one of your kids for the night and I will join the fun. |

SON & K - you need to lighten up. About 4 years ago I was scolded about bringing my kids into the GLB too. Have not brought them back since. In recent weeks I have had many an opportunity to dine downtown. I've avoided GLB due to a recent not so pleasant experience. SO Nanny, I'm a currently a private citizen. I think you raised a good idea. If you are willing to take the lead on a project to clean the Duck Pond, I would be willing to donate some of my time to help. I suggest you move this topic to a different thread. Latest MasterCard Commercial: The look on the owners faces as 20 kids under the age of 10 walk in to have dinner - priceless! Have a great weekend all!

Actually, I think the owners would simply vaporize if this happened. Though we've never had big problems at Gaslight, and go there once in a while with our semi-grown-up kids, the supervising woman there (owner?) once told me to take my foot off the seat, when I was sitting on it as a "booster." Not a comfortable moment. I don't think I've been corrected while dining since elementary-school cafeteria. |

One thing that I'd like to know is what meals to avoid at Gaslight. A lot of people on this thread seem to be negative on the food and I'd like specific examples of what dishes were so terrible and what was wrong with them. I only ask because I've had many of the dishes on the menu and many of the specials and I've had nothing but great experiences. Also, as far as the beer: It's all a matter of taste. To those of you who complain that it's substandard, perhaps it's because you are not used to drinking good, specialty beers. If all you know is Coors and Bud... well I wouldn't expect you to enjoy a well made IPA or Porter.

How about we try "Little League Night" and "Cub Scout Night" at the brewery -- Imagine an entire team or scout pack of kids with parents!
(the adults only will be drinking beer!) /p |

Newsdeadline, As far as the quality of beer there, it is not very good. This is not because I know nothing about beer. I brew my own beer, and might be what you call a beer connoisseur. I have tasted one or two beers there that I would consider good. Unfortunately, most of the beers that come out of the place really are not good. Whether or not they put the effort into making them is up for discussion, but they generally do not come out very good. (Taste is a problem, but so is under-carbonation) As for the food, I haven't had a problem with it. It's not bad, but it is generally overpriced. Also, if you knew anything about beer, I wouldn't reprimand people for not enjoying a porter. A porter is really just a simple, not very good, version of a stout. And actually, I don't enjoy IPAs. They are generally a little too bitter from the hops for me. I enjoy all types of beer from oatmeal stouts to amber lagers to lighter ales. But what is constant is my desire for a good beer. Give me a good stout, nice brown ale, or a decent lager and I am happy.

Right. If you're not a beer expert or choose to have dinner with your family, you should be treated like an outcast who is given the privilege of dining in a subpar, overpriced establishment. Maybe the owners should visit the St. James Gate to see how a restaurant is supposed to treat its customers. |

Over the years I have brewed my own beer, visited many brew pubs, and brought home many different kinds of micro brews. To quote the great philosopher Homer, "I like beer." The second time I went to the Gaslight, I ordered scotch. |
