I'm all for donating money to a great cause, but enjoy doing it in the privacy of my home with a checkbook. We've noticed that there are many "non-profit" groups ringing our bells in the evenings, no matter the season, looking for "any donation". Am I the only one who feels interrupted by these groups? I try to be polite, ask them to leave literature, but they press on. How legit are most? Just last Thursday, the Sierra folks came by. What gives? |

I called the police regarding this, and was advised anyone peddling or seeking donations have to notify the police and some need a lic. from the Village.

I live in Maplewood, and I suspect the situation is similar. I appreciate their coming by, but I suppose it has a lot to do with the fact that I support their causes. My favorite is NJ Citizens for Action. They're very courteous and informative. |

we've had the hard sell from the NJPIRG (twice--different solicitors) and just now, the SIERRA CLUB, as well. the spiel is that BUSH has approved various drilling, and sundry other modes of environmental violations (some within the state), and the best way to stop it is to join RIGHT NOW costing some $$$ in monthly pledges for the year. now, i'm a tree hugger myself, but the huge immediate cash demands are a little off-putting. |

Kibbegirl -- You are lucky that they would have accepted "any donation" from you, and not the large full membership fee, PLUS the monthly required pledges. Mr Gray -- I am sure the SOPD did not know about the NJPIRG folks, because when they parked on the street over the allotted hours -until 9 or 10pm- there was a cop who went house to house asking if the car were our visitors'. (They must not have been students from around here, as they did not have any SHU sticker on their huge black SUV.) PS I've read that the ones to watch out for are the kids who sell magazine subscriptions and the ones who want to paint your sidewalk. |

Years ago my grandfather used to tell me about "Irish Gypsies". I used to laugh when he told me they come out of the south for the summer and offer to do all sorts of work at residences in NY,NJ,CT,MA. Then they would take a down payment and split. A couple of years ago "Irish Travelers" made the news b/c of that woman and her kids. So now we all know my Grandpa was right. Well... I got duped by these folk for a paving job. I should have seen it coming. I was not taken for a lot of money & they did lay down the initial material. However, they split for the day after about an hour. They never came back. A week later I had driveway paved by Zavocki Co. and all was good. Moral:I will never purchase anything again from a door to door salesman. Ps:Don't call that toll free # for a free Book of Mormon after boozing with your buddies either. I don't subscribe to Mormon tenants I just sloshingly thought FREE BOOK for the shelf. Problem is they mail it to you, then they call every day to set up an appointment for "Bible study", THEN after you decline THEY SHOW UP AT YOUR DOOR!! Nice suits, but not my type of discussion group. I upset them face to face when I told them someone probably played a prank on me. All hail Baal |
