( From the South Orange Website) CELEBRATE EMS DAY WITH SOUTH ORANGE RESCUE SQUAD! Each year, South Orange residents, business owners, employees and visitors to the Village require emergency medical care for traumatic injuries, burns, poisoning, spinal injuries, heart attacks, respiratory problems and other critical medical emergencies. EMS week is a national celebration that highlights how the emergency medical services system makes a difference in the lives of everyone nationwide. This year EMS week will be celebrated by the South Orange Fire Department, the South Orange Police Department, and the South Orange Rescue Squad on Sunday, May 15th from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm at the Squad House and in the Third Street Parking Lot. The purpose of this celebration is to promote EMS health and safety awareness. During EMS Week, Rescue Squads educate the public about EMTs and how they interface with other agencies such as police departments, fire departments, paramedics, EMS dispatchers and emergency room personnel. The EMS Week celebration is a day to honor the Fire Department, the Police Department and the Rescue Squad. This year our public safety agencies will be participating in EMS Week by giving tours and demonstrations. The Fire Department will exhibit its fire engines, its turnout gear, and demonstrate use of its extrication equipment. The Police Department will have an inspection station for infant and child safety seats. The Rescue Squad will be giving tours of the ambulances, demonstrating use of the equipment used on most calls, having a teddy bear clinic for young children, offering blood pressure screenings and providing various health and safety information to the public. Tours of the ambulances, the demonstration of equipment and the teddy bear clinic are crucial for young children to help eliminate their fears of EMS. There will be a coloring contest for preschool children and a poster contest for school age children. Any school age child wishing to enter the contest must draw a poster about "What to do in an Emergency." Names, addresses, phone numbers, grade and age of the child should be put on the back of the poster and dropped off at the Rescue Squad at 1:00 am on May 15th. Winners of the contests will be announced that same day at 2:30 pm. In addition to the EMS Celebration, there will be a blood drive at the Squad House from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. Free food and drinks will be provided throughout the day.
