Pizzaz - your message is full of sour grapes. You are disparaging Terriann and Stacey for what? Are they responsible for how Calabreses and Rosen divided up the commitees? You imply that Terriann is somehow tainted but its just an aspersion and close to slander. Are there any facts that support your contention that she will not be effective in that role? No you dont have any because it is far too soon to say who will be effective in what roles.

Will Terriann be able to contribute to village governance and will she be effective and independent is the question you should ask. Right now you dont know the answer. Stacey expresses optimism and you express cynicism. How would you want a new board member to express herself? She is confident and there will be ample opportunity to criticize when decisions are made and votes are counted about who is effective and who isnt.

I for one did not vote for Stacey but I wish her the best. I did not vote for Eric either and I likewise wish him the best.

One person I did not vote for is you and now I am happy that I did not.

Pizzaz,

You say "You decide, Susan. Welcome to South Orange politics."...I've been here a while, and I've seen a lot of things.

Last night's meeting was a disgrace. I'm only intrigued that you wrote such a detailed discussion of it without mentioning the fact that Mark Rosner was essentially forced to chair the one major committee that he really wanted to be rotated off of (Public Safety?). He objected vehemently, and at the correct time, and was ignored.

Now you are ignoring him too. Does that mean that you agree with Bill C. on this one, or did you just forget to mention it? Welcome to South Orange politics, indeed.

The results only show that the community must get involved! You must be heard and your objections recognized. There MUST be dialogue on what is perceived as a "fix" on the committee assignments.

May I suggest that we begin a thread specifically to this topic. If someone would post the actual assignments both primary and alternates as the first post on the proposed thread.

Note: Agenda never posted on www.southorange.org which would have listed all resolutions (positions/committees) for reorganization.

Pete: Last night's meeting was to swear in the new trustees and for committee assignments. Theoretically, there is supposed to be some discussions. In the past the current trustees often discussed in advance of the meeting and there would be a give and take. This time, Trustee Rosen decided to put together a list with Bill Calabrese and probably showed it to Art Taylor too. No discussions, no explanations, just Allan reading a list and the majority of the BOT going along.
As posted above, this was clearly my punishment for not always agreeing with Bill and not supporting the line C ticket.

My guess is that Art, Terriann and Stacey were aware of the assignments.

Mark - You were the only person up there last night who has any integrity.

The machine is in.

Mark Rosner for president in 2007.
It is time to start getting serious about this situation. Unless you want Rosen or taylor to become president in 07 I strongly suggest everyone in support of Mr. Rosner start to talk him up. Mr Pogany you make a great pizza but please your voter turn out says it all. I ask you also to support Mark Rosner in 07! Last night meeting was a joke! Two years will come sooner than you think and it is now time to start the campaign to replace- Taylor, Rosen and Calabrese!

Jeff and Howard,
You all should take a lesson from Line C and be more positive. Messages of happines, harmony and joy. Then use your allies to attack your opponents while you spout lies to the public.
Didn't you feel all orangy inside when Moore-Abrams said "There was a great deal of mud-slinging ... I hope that the campaing is left as just a campaign and we can leave the trail behind us for the benefit of South Orange."
Maybe you two are just too honest to be trustees.

Also -- why is the "political machine" interested in tiny SO? Of what huge value are we in the scheme of Essex County politics?

(or perhaps, the question is, what value has SO been to Exxes County politics?).

Isn't it always the big three? Money, influence and votes.

Quick assessment of county political interest in our quaint Village:

Urban municipalities are a lock for county Dem's, and wealthiest suburbs are a distant hope -- some even pushing for secession from the union, seeking safe havens with adjacent counties. South Orange remains a "swing state," which they simply cannot afford to lose for county, state, or federal elections.

Believe me, you're not going to see Newark political operatives appear at elections in Livingston, Millburn, or Caldwell -- as they did at the SHU polling place, before Essex Sheriffs, mentors Art Taylor and Terriann Moore-Abrams told them to go home.

This may seem like a small detail in comparison to the obvious misassignment of Eric DeVaris and the failure to consider Mark Rosner's wishes...but did anyone else catch Allan Rosen's display of numeracy before and during the swearing in ceremonies?

8020 votes, 2800+ voters. It shouldn't take 5 minutes to figure out that this is a legitimate result. (400 undervotes seems about right for an election like this.)

I don't ask for an actuary's level of numeracy from everyone on the BOT, but I'd like to think our Trustees could do back-of-envelope reasonability checks with a little more facility. If he had had serious questions about overvoting, the election results had been available for five days and he could have figured this out offline. (I could be mixed-up here, but isn't Allan an accomplished bridge player? I'd think this sort of manipulation would come to him easily!)

Sorry for the interruption, but I had to vent. Now back to more substantive issues.

But, has Maplewood experienced the same type of influence? Or, does it play out differently with the partisan elections that they have?

Partisan elections are a no-brainer. County Dems support Maplewood Dems -- no questions asked.

I don't think you would see Newark political operatives even at Maplewood primaries.

Stuart: I even joked after his goof that clearly one committee he should not be on is the finance. Little did I know that he had pegged himself to be the chair.

Allan's appointment as chair of the finance committee is a disaster. Even though he has been on the committee for 100 years, and had been the chairman before Steglitz, having him as chair is a joke.

Rather interesting -- I believe the 2 most "visible" committees are public safety and DPW.

For instance, now Mark can "take the blame" for the police & fire contracts, etc. and Eric can "take the blame" for slow leaf or snow removal.

The others (perhaps with the exceprtion of recreation) -- have little "public face" IMO (I don't think redevelopment is overtly associated with any specific one).

Mark and Eric -- I wish you well with those assignments! (and I hope it wasn't a set-up).

Pete

Pete, you've expressed my concerns...I've wondered if Mark is being set up to be the bad guy in any upcoming contract negotiations.

Susan and Pete- I wanted to check with people who know, but I believe all labor contract negotiations have been concluded- DPW, police and town employees for sure. Fire Dept. is the only one I'm not sure of.
