At the intersection of Prospect & Irvington, they've installed a new audio-enhanced crossing technology, presumably for blind pedestrians. During the 'walk' cycle, a speaker emits a "tink...tink...tink..." sound, and with 10 seconds left, a voice announces "Ten...nine...eight..seven..." etc. I'm all for helping handicapped people cross safely, and perhaps there was a special need for this precaution at this particular intersection. But for the rest of us, it's like a Chinese water torture 24/7. It's not outrageously loud, but people living in the vicinity must endure it over and over and over -- all night and all day long. Are they going to install this at all lights in the community? |

There is also one at the intersection of South Orange Ave and Scotland Road. I agree with you, it's annoying. |

Having nothing to do with the water torture but a related topic.... At the corner of Ridgewood and Walton, one of the blinking lights has burnt out--again. Last time it took weeks to replace...can we do better this time? |

Stuart: It depends. How much time has passed so far since you called the town to let them know? |

have not called the police...don't know the dpw number offhand. Not asking them to fix it on a weekend and pay double time...but early next week would be nice. Don't the police cruise the whole town, and wouldn't they report a light out? |

Rastro, thanks for the #. I don't have 'em memorized yet. The menu for Village Hall didn't seem to have any appropriate options, so I called the Police Department non-emergency number and let them know. |

In my opinion, your request should be documented in writing, with notes about subsequent calls. But maybe that's just me. |

Depends. Is your point to get it fixed, or to catch the town asleep on the job? |

If your point is to get it fixed, documentation may serve you well. Is my point. |

Is it burned out or have a short? (I swear it was working the other day and then it went off again in the time it took me too look both ways!) Either way, it needs to be looked at... |

I hope you don't think that if a light doesn't get fixed it's the PD's fault, Just because they report a light out doesn't mean it gets fixed right away |

BTW, is it really that big a deal to have those audible signals in place? Other than that little convenience we call "eyesight", I'm sure the blind have complaints about similar issues |

It's a big deal only to those people who live in the vicinity. Would you like to hear "Beep...Beep...Beep...10...9...8...7...6..." over and over while you're trying to sleep? |

I passed this intersection last night. The noise is ridiculous. There has to be a better way. I couldn't tolerate it if I lived near it, either. |

My point is that my calling in *should* not matter much because the police would presumably see the problem and mention it to DPW. |

Are there any blind people in the area of the noisy light? Maybe the counting is not for the blind. In San Francisco they have really neat lights that count, silently. It is great because you know how long you have to cross. Someone should call Sal Renda and ask what his intentions were. |

It's bad enough in the daytime, but at night when it's quiet it sounds like a car alarm that keeps on going and going and going and going.... I'm using earplugs. Wouldn't it be great if the rocket scientist who dreamt this one up had to actually live with it himself before unleashing it on the public? This principle should also apply to the folks that brought us bagless vacuum cleaners, digital cameras, cordless vacs (they all stop sucking shortly after purchase), and digital sports watches that cannot be adjusted unless you carry a copy of the (often unreadable) instructions with you at all times. |

Stuart0628- "My point is that my calling in *should* not matter much because the police would presumably see the problem and mention it to DPW." you're right about that, not only does the PD make the phone calls but the locations of all outages are logged into a book at the station. so when they get repeated calls they can see it's been in the book for a while and make more calls trying to put the heat on the guys who are supposed to fix 'em. It's not always the DPW that have to change the lights either, depending on what road it's on the job may have to go to the county roads dept BTW, doesn't the dpw have to pass that intersection pretty much to get anywhare in town

Old and gray- You really do have a personal problem with college people, dont you? You seem to include your feelings on SHU in every post you make, regardless of the topic and how little it has to do with the subject you are posting about. |

Mysteriously, the device feel silent yesterday. Either the township got a lot of complaints, or some enraged resident took matters into his own hands with a sledgehammer (I have a bagless vacuum I'd like him to demolish). Keeping my fingers crossed (and earplugs handy). |

...would absolutely drive me wild. Keep us posted Ligeti, as to whether it was damaged or officially disconnected. Our house was close-by the school bus yard, (which was the mulch pile for many years after we moved there.) The beep beep of backing up was annoying, and that was only from 6am-8am and again from 2pm to 5pm. In Florida, it's so quiet you could hear an alligator burp. |

Thats not true, I was very pleased with voting at SHU this year...It wasn't as bad as I expected even with that event going on. and there are plenty of other posters on here who have their constant pet peeves come through in a majority of their posts. |

I find the new beeping crossing singles they installed at Scotland & South Orange Ave and Prospect & Irvington to be incredibly annoying. The first time I herd them I said to myself what is that hirable beeping I wish It would just stop. I'm disabled. I'm legally blind. I'm all for 100% helping people with disabilities, but I think there could be an other to do this without the annoying beep. Especially at night when it is very quiet and sound are much louder then during the day. During the day there are so many different sounds happening at once that you do not notice it like you do at night when it is very quiet. |
